I want to build my own pc

I would like to build my own pc for a gaming computer. I don't want or need top of the line but I want something better then my 500mhz p3 that will run games like WOW nicely. I'm willing to spend up to 1000 on the parts for tower alone. I have never built my own pc but I do have some knowledge of the parts that make up and run computers.. Any advice would be appreciated greatly.

AMD or INTEL?

Have you looked through this forum for other "first build" threads? There are lots of them and you might get some ideas about your build from them.

With your budget it looks like you could fit an Intel Core 2 Duo in there - they are the best processors out in terms of dual core right now.

Thanks for all the help! I have heard that the AMD Athlon X2 64 bit was better then the intel core duo because it is 64 bit and the intel is still 32 bit. Maybe that was untrue? I have no preference all that matters is what performs for the right price.

Intel Core 2 Duo's seemed to be preferred at this forum. Great performance and price, especially the 6300, very overclockable if that is your thing....

Edit:
To get you started, if you don't mind Intel:

Core 2 Duo E6300 cpu

Asus or Intel mobo, I can get more detailed if you wish.

Corsair Value Select RAM, 2 gigs, matched DDR2 pair....

eVGA 7600 GT graphics card

Seagate 7200.10 Hard drive

We HIGHLY suggest Newegg.com for ordering, great prices, good selection, fast delivery and incredible customer service.

Problem with that is 64 bit computing for home use just hasn't taken off yet. Trying to find drivers for all your devices can be a nightmare and there really aren't that many programs that take advantage of 64 bits yet. Don't worry about the 32 bit vs. 64 bit thing...it's a non-issue.

I thought the Core 2 Duos were 64bit... they say 64bit support so I thought they were.

All Intel desktop processors since the day of the 5x1 Prescott's have had 64bit capability.

Thanks, I think I can go with 1 GB of ram as I don't play any games that need more then that, I could always add more as needed. And you said windows XP but I was going to use Linux to save money would that be possible?
