Having problems, please help

I just built my entire pc using the asus m2n sli deluxe mobo with amd athlon 64 X2, and when I start up my machine, the cpu fan doesnt run at all, there's no beeps, I don't get a display, and the cd drives dont open. However, I used the IDE cables that came with my motherboard for the HDD. Im afraid to run it too long without the cpu fan working. I have the cpu fan plugged in and the power supply connected to the socket near my cpu

Yeah, it's a great idea. A basic way of discerning a hardware problem in a new build.

Yes, it works. A common mistake with first builds is either having too many standoffs installed in the motherboard mounting tray or none at all. By having the core components out of the case for the first POST you eliminate the possibility of the motherboard shorting/grounding out to the case somehow and this gives the core components a chance to start up properly.
