2nd Build, 1st AMD and having issues

im putting a puter together for my roomate, and am having a problem getting it up and running. llet me start off with telling you what hardware i am working with.

CD BUR SONY|CRX230EE/B2 W/O SW BK
HD 160G|HITC 7K 8M ATA133 0A31635
CPU AMD|A64 FX-55 2.6G 939 1M 90N
MB ASUS A8R-MVP XPRESS200 939
VGA ASUS A EAX1300PRO/TD/256M R

threw it all (not literally) in a case and added an old floppy to it.

when i plugged it in and turned on the power to the power source (for the first time), the power light on the MOBO didnt turned on. after about 15-20 seconds, i smelled what reminded me of melted rubber and turned it off the power source instantly. then i unplugged it. i know the MOBO power cables were all connected properly, and i didnt have anything connected to the tower besides the power cable.

what are possible problems and how can i fix them?

If the I/O panel on your vid card is touching the mobo, it could cause issues. Test the PSU, I'd say. Someone will probably give you a more educated solution, but I'd do that first.

thanks, i was thinking about pulling out all of the cards and just running it off the onboard video to see how that worked. i wanted to get some feedback before i treid anything else though.

i forgot to mention i have 2 512 sticks of RAM in the board. 1 kingston, the other is another brand (cannot remember which brand) placed in the proper ports to make use of the dual channel.

sounds like the power supply got a little too hot. You should try and find exactly what melted. Perhaps an extra standoff in the case, that should have been removed, was touching the MB creating a short circuit. But definitely find out what got hot.

Brand and model of power supply? I don't see it listed above.

Follow the troubleshooting instructions found here. You must remove the motherboard from the case when doing this...you're trying to determine if the motherboard is shorting/grounding out to the case.

And yes, please give us the complete system specs for this computer. List all the parts by brand and model including the power supply.

I would get rid of that PSU...case/PSU combos aren't a good idea.

Hold up there, that is a great PSU made by FSP. Look into stuff before you just go telling people to throw things away. With that being said, I think that an X1300 would be pushing it for a 300W Power Supply. You might have cooked the PSU. I would disconnect the PSU from everything and then turn it back on and see if it smokes/burns/smells. If it does, it is probably dead. The X1300 requires a power supply with at least 420 Watts according to some googleing, so your video card probably blew out the 300 Watt Power Supply. You should get at least this: ($40 + shipping) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817189003 . However, that won't leave you much upgrade room. This one ($54 + Shipping) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817104954 will power video cards up to the lower end X19xx series ATI Video Cards if your room mate ever wants to upgrade.

Granted, however, after experiencing/watching about 15 case/PSU combos go south from initial startup, all by reputable brands, my advice is to not use them.

And the keyboard issue may be caused by your BOIS not being set to read a USB keyboard...thats only true if it is a USB keyboard, but try that out, or plug in the other kind.

What kind of keyboard are you using now? USB or PS/2?

What are these reputable brands you experienced these problems with? That's a lot of bad case/power supply combos you've encountered there. I've been building for 9 years and only use reputable cases with good power supplies in them (mostly Antec, AOpen and Inwin) and I've never had any of those power supplies go bad at initial startup all these years.

Try what out? Enter the BIOS and enablelegacy USB devices? How is he going to do that if he can't use the keyboard to hit the Del key to enter BIOS setup?

A 300w psu is more then enough for the X1300. If something does require more power, the Powersupply will turn itself off. The OCP (over current protection) shorts when the power draw has increased the number alloted on the rail. It doesnt really "blow up".

both keyboards i have tried are ps/2 . they light up when it powers on, but then its like they dont respond. hitting the caps lock and num lock does not do anything. ive got a problem with my current ASUS board where the ps2 port for the keyboard stopped working, and its possible it could have fried out the keyboards already.

the power supply seems fine now (it was either an extra bolt causing a short, or incorrectly usb plugs were placed incorrectly). if there was an issue with the power supply, ive got another 3 sitting around here that i could use.

Dumb question but are you sure you plugged the keyboards into the right PS/2 ports?

Have you tried those keyboard in other computers just to verify that they're dead or not?

I have used a TON of TS-1's for builds - with video cards up to the power of an X700. I have yet to have the PSU go bad. It's a 300 watt FSP with dual rails and it's ATX 2.0. That is my standard case recommendation for office builds.
