Having trouble, starting to get nervous...help please!

I am building for the first time - I got everything together and pressed the power button but...nothing. I took the mb and everything out of the case and proceeded as suggested to try again with just the power supply, memory, video card, cpo and fans. When I push the power button the fans all spin momentarily and then stop. What can I try next???

Equiptment:
Core 2 duo
atx 500 watt power supply
Intel DG965wh Media series motherboard
ATI Radeon 1600 video card
ATI Crossfire Duo memory
Seagate 320 GB serial ATA hard drive

Any help would be sooooo appreciated, Christmas is drawing near!!!!

Are you just flipping the rocker switch on the back of the power supply to turn the system on? Or are you using a screwdriver to jumper the 2 PWR_ON pins of the front panel header?

What brand power supply are you using?

Do you have both power supply cables (2) connected to the motherboard?

thanks for helping

Sorry I left for a little while. My son is trying to do homework. I tried both ways with the same result. I used a screwdriver and then connected the wires and pushed the button. The power supply came in a bundle with the case - already installed in the case. It just says ATX 500 watt. The case is ultragrid atx midtower

That power supply is made by Ultra, and is on our "bad" list. Most power supplies bundled with cases are poor quality to begin with. I would swap it with a different brand. What is your budget for a power supply? I can find you a new one.

I bet you bought this: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...0092&CatId=333

I sure did! I just went to be sure I had both power supply cable connected and all of a sudden - without any changes- the fans no longer spin at all. . Being that the power supply is already connected to the case, will I have trouble changing it? Do you think that sounds like my problem?

Actually, I did not buy that exact bundle. the case and power supply were bundled, but not the rest. The power supply in the link you sent me was 400w - this one is 500w

Well, the power supply should be changed period - Ultras are low quality. If you can, I'd get one of these instead, they should power your system fine for a low price:

Also where is your motherboard? Try the out-of-case trouble shooter sticked in the Build Your Own PC forum.

Newegg delivers incredibly fast....

Edit:
Or try calling your local computer store: Best Buy, CompUSA, etc. and see if they have a psu by these companies: Fortron, Sparkle, Enermax, Enlight, Antec, PC Power and Cooling, or Thermaltake.

Go ahead and go to CompUSA and grab one of their Antec power supplies. At least 400 watts. Sorry, did not see you say that.

See if you can find a Antec, Enermax, Fortron Source or Sparkle Power power supply locally. You'll only need a 400 watt PSU to power those specs.

Here's a list of good and bad power supply brands. Stay away from any power supply on the bad list.

Last time I went to CompUSA I could not find a wide selection like that... maybe you will have luck, though.
