What exactly is your question? Are MB's with onboard sound and ethernet any good?

Yes, they CAN be good as long as one is not needing a powerful sound experience. You may want to find out what exactly the specs are for that pre-built. The key to happy computing is good quality components. Get the specific manufacturer and model # and post back here with it. I doubt he'll get real quality for $300, unless he gets a Dell.

You are not going to even GET a computer for $300 without a fully integrated motherboard. Even cheap video, sound, and Ethernet cards cost money. Onboard sound and Ethernet are the norm these days and work fine. Onboard video works fine unless you want to play games. You are not going to get a gaming computer for 300 bucks, period.
