Fan trouble
I am building my first PC. When I turn the computer on for the first time, it goes to the BIOS screen and then says "Checking system cooling fan operation." Then it tells me that the system's cooling fan is not operating properly. "Your system has been halted." The fan appears to be working fine. It is on and spinning. I have unplugged and re-plugged a few times, but that hasnt helped. I plugged it into the other 3-pin and that doesnt help either. My power supply is 450W and I do not have any hardware that would be a problem.
Pentium 4 3.0, 800 FBS. DVD drive SATA hard drive. No special video or sound cards. Any ideas? I have googled the problem and found nothing. |

Hi mattaggie,
Welcome to PC Mechanic !! ![]() The fan needs to be connected to the correct mobo header. Double check your manual to make sure it's on the right one; sometimes they are hidden out of the way and are hard to find. HTH TwoRails |

First off, that PSU is trouble waiting to happen. Get that out of there asap and put in something along these lines (if you are planning to add a video card in the future, this: ($54) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817104954 is a good PSU).
$40 - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817189003 $42 - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817104953 I am not familiar with Socket 478, but you should plug the fan into the CPU_FAN header on the motherboard.

The rpm sensor part of the fan could be bad or a poor wire connection in the plug.

Those PSU's you recommended are all ATX 2.0 units and not necessary for that motherboard. This is all you need:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817103428 You have either a bad CPU fan or a bad motherboard. |
