I just began building my new pc last night and everything went smoothly, until I tried to turn it on. It would not turn on, and there was no power running to it at all. I hooked up all the case power switch wires ( LED, HDD, PWR, RESET ), but nothing
... There was a problem i noticed with the HDD wire i believe, it broke in half. The wires for the connection appear to be fine, just the plastic that holds them together split in half, so i plugged them in indiviually. Could this be a problem? Also, the only things i have installed right now is the power supply, motherboard, and the cpu with fan. Nothing else. Do more things need to be installed before the computer will start up? This is confusing very much, but it seems like a simple problem. Any help would be very much appreciated. Thanks alot - Rafer |

The first thing to do would be to read this thread and attempt the "out of case build" http://forum.pcmech.com/showthread.php?t=132409
The broken harddrive connection, is that the power connector (molex) or data cable? Is this an IDE or SATA harddrive?

thanks, I have already read that threat and it helps with some understanding of setting it up for powering up, but doesn't tell me if i have a bad connection. That HDD LED wire is from the case, ( runs with the pwr sw, reset sw, etc ).
it's a green wire and a white wire... |

Can you give us a complete list of the components you are using (make and model numbers), especially the power supply.
Some motherboards will not respond unless a harddrive is installed and connected. |

I just got home and installed the ram, plugged in the hard drive, installed the video card, and hooked up the fans. I checked the wires again and tried to boot up. Nothing. I'm beginning to wonder if I need a replacement switch for the case..
Also, my PSU came with a 6 pin 12v connector for the MB, but it fits the 4 pin no problem. Is this an issue? According to the manuals, i'm doing eveything ok. |

Try the reset switch wires on the PWR pins, that will eliminate the PWR switch.
Make sure that the switch on the back of the PSU is in the ON position.

thanks for the help guys. I just found out i was using the wrong 12v atx connector for the MB. I got the system to power up, but nothing shows up on my moniter, and the case led is displaying a blinking red light, instead of solid green. This can't the best, so I turned the computer off. What could be the cause of this?

Well, ECS is a bad motherboard brand and your PSU is on the Bad list in the PSU Reference Thread (http://www.forum.pcmech.com/showthread.php?t=131195 ), so one or both of those could be causing the problem. What video card are you using? Some of them require an additional power plug.

The out of the case build mentioned earlier is to determine whether or not the system is shorting out against the case. If it works out of the case, there is a problem with the standoffs and the motherboard mounting. If it still does not work out of the case with the minimum components, there is a defective component, and andper10 mentioned the likely problems there.
