Computer not firing up!?!?

So I built this computer for my parents just over 2 years ago. Its a P4 D865GBF board with a 2.4 HT processor in it with 512mb RAM. It was a budget computer for them so its using the onbard video. Well the computer shut down for them about a year ago and they couldn't get it to turn on. I took it apart and put it back together and it has worked fine for the last year. I have been using it recently as my desktop, and have noticed it starting to act up again. Our circuit breaker trips often this time of year, with all the christmas lights, and I don't know if maybe that is what is making this shut off thing happen again. Its on a surge protector and all. Sometimes when I shut it down, or restart it, it will power off then power back on, but the screen will be blank. Last time I played with the memory for about 30 min and finally after installing it backwards, then the right way, it turned on. Another thing, even without the memory installed it should boot up and display the intel logo with the processor in, right? Im not even getting that. No beeps or anything to indicate problems. Do I have bad memory, a bad board, or processor, or what?

Bad power supply comes to my mind. We need all your specifications - brand and model.

PowerTeks are poor quality units... at least I think they are. I'd replace it and see what happens. A 500w poor quality power supply is much worse than a 400w high quality power supply, like Fortron Source.

It won't do anything but beep angrily at you if the memory is out.

Definitely replace the psu with a quality unit like Fortron. You can find a list of quality psu's in the top portion of the General Hardware Forum. www.Newegg.com is an excellent online supplier that delivers FAST!

I think it's the other way around, isn't it? I'm just curious.. I Googled it and I cannot find out for sure. I think FSP is just a marketing name for Sparkle (SPI).

You do not even need or want an ATX 2.0 unit for that board. It's a 20 pin board and you are using onboard video. All you need is a 300 watt ATX 1.x unit from a quality manufacturer such as Fortron/FSP/Sparkle/SPI.

FSP Group is the parent company of Fortron Source and Sparkle Power.

The Sparkle PSU's with 80mm fans are noisy. Just look at the reviews. FSP uses quieter ball bearing fans. This would be a good equivanent choice: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817104901 . Yes it is not ATX 1.1 like the Sparkle, but you can detatch the extra 4 pins and I believe that you will be set. They make a 300 Watt (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817103428 ) too, but people are saying that the cables are too short.

I tried another PSU today and it is still doing the same thing. Should I send the board back to Intel under warranty? Its 2 years old and they offer a 3 year on these things right?

Its not a new build.. maybe this is in the wrong section. It has worked fine for 2 years and is not giving me problems, on an off.

Use the new build trouble shooting guide just as if a new build. Fixing an old PC, you still need to remove/disconnect parts. Need to eliminated all possiblities which includes the case.
