Smile E6600 Build...helpful suggestions welcomed !

I'm on a $1000-1300 budget to include a new 19inch LCD Wide Screen Monitor. However where I can save money without sacrificing performance and quality that would be awesome. I have keyboard, mouse and speakers already. I plan on using On-Board Audio. I've picked out parts based on the comments in this forum and some of the reviews on newegg. Everything will be purchased from newegg.

Things I'm sure of:

CPU: E6600 Conroe 2.4Ghz - Retail
HDD: Seagate 320g 7200.10 - OEM
Optical: Lite-On DVDRW - Retail
RAM: Corsair XMS Series 2 x 1G Dual Channel Kit. I can't decide on DDR 677 or 800. I don't plan on over clocking but I would like whatever is best for game performance. I play a lot World of Warcraft and some BF2142.

Things I'm not sure of:

Video Card: I see a lot of recommendations for the X1950Pro...Tom's Hardware recommends this card also. There are a lot of variations of this card. Any comments on the HIS version? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814161043
I've read the Sapphire makes a lot of noise.

Mobo: I'm thinking of a P5B...but I'm not sure which version I need. I don't need WiFi or anything like that. I don't plan on SLI so I'm not needing that. Would the P5B-E be the board for me?

Lastly the PSU: I'll probably be getting the case and power supply seperate so I was wondering if 430W was enough to power what I have listed...if so I was thinking this Thermaltake 430W http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817153023
If the quality on that is lacking I'm very interested in the Seasonic 430W....and if 430W isn't enough could someone suggest a quality 500W?

The 19inch LCD WS will be picked out based on what I have left over.

I know you guys get a lot of these types of posts so I really do appreciate the time you take to answer the few questions I have. Thanks again!

To save some money get the E6300 as it's still a very fast processor and more than capable of playing WoW and BF2142...unless you absolutely must have the E6600.

And if you aren't going to overclock just get the DDR2 667 RAM.

I'm not a gamer so I can't really help you with the choice of video card but I hear the HIS version of that card is pretty good.

Why not just get the plain P5B? It's still a good motherboard just without all the bells and whistles.

I'd go with the Seasonic over the Thermaltake any day. Or you could go with this 450 watt Fortron Source PSU, it may be more than enough for this system.

Go with the SAPPHIRE X1950 Pro and the SEASONIC S12 500 watt PSU - you'll be set on those.

Thanks for the timely replies Cricket and Chuck. I do prefer the E6600 so I will be splurging on that. And I was already leaning towards the seasonic. Chuck I read some bad reviews of the Sapphire card being noisy. I know newegg reviews are to be taken with a grain of salt but it was actually quite a few. Any reason the sapphire over the HIS?

Actually a quick edit...there are two different Sapphires....one has a fan problem and the other has a non compatible driver issue...any ideas?

If you don't mind that it's not an ATI chipset or the price, not sure if it fits in your budget:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Custra...82E16814130061
eVGA 7950 GT $269.99

Nothing but good reports on eVGA here on PC Mech.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Custra...82E16814130033
eVGA 7900 GT $235.99

I'm not comfortable suggesting a manufacturer that is not highly spoken of here at the Mech and I haven't been hanging around long enough to notice any other makers, although I'm sure some of others here will be able to do so.

Tim's card choices are solid, purely powerful choices, but I think money is better spend on an X1950Pro since the 7900gt line is showing its age. I'd take a 7950gt anyday, though.

Just a suggestion to add.
The reviews of the new DX10 cards are all good and their performance with DX9 games has been really good as well.
I would get a 'place holder' card that will play your games and put the money saved toward a DX10 card for later when the price for them drops.

Just like you said, sometimes you do disregard newegg reviews. The first is probally an OEM version and the second is a Retail most likely.

On the noise, the sapphire card isnt "specially" louder because its a sapphire card. The Cooler on the Sapphire you see is the Stock Reference ATI Cooler. On all non modified cards in that series, the same blower style cooler is used. It is loud when ramped up. HIS sells some of their cards with a very efficient, quieter, cooler. I'd suggest it.

Go with this power supply:
Silverstone ST50EF 500W

A Sapphire X1950XT is just a little more at $250: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814102067 . However, it has the noisy fan on it, so I guess that you probably wouldn't justify the preformance increase because of the extra noise. HIS makes one with their queter cooler, but it is $310: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814161048 . Just wanted you to make sure you know about your options. Enjoy your build!

Corsair DDR2-667 value ram is good enough for stock and mild overclocks.

Since I don't really play a lot of the new hardcore games I decided to go ahead and get a "place holder" card to save some money. I know some of you say the 7900 is a dieing series but its a huge upgrade over my Radeon 9600 AGP card. Please let me know if you see any compatibility issues.

Heres what I've decided to do...

CPU: Conroe 2.4GHz E6600
Mobo: Asus P5B-E
RAM: Corsair Value-Select 2x1G DDR 677
HDD: Seagate 7200.10 320g
Optical: Lite-On DVDRW Retail
PSU: I decided to spend a little extra money on a quality PSU...its an Enermax Liberty 500W...let me know what you think http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817194003

Edit: I've also got my eye on this Seasonic 500W...http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817151024 After reading some pros and cons of the modular cabling.

Video Card: And finally decided on a decent 7900GS to upgrade to from a Radeon 9600....this card here http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814130056

I haven't decided on a case yet but I'm left with about $120 to stay on budget. I guess I'll have to talk the folks into a 19" WS for Christmas

That Seasonic 500w is fine but so is this one: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817256001

I agree thbat the 7900gs will be good for you.

About the case, maybe this one? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811129017

Eric, FYI, there is alot of incorrect propaganda being passed around about modular cabling. Modular interface if done right is very helpful. That enermax liberty is a high quality one.

The Silverstone ST50EF that newb suggested will also be MORE then enough.

Not sure what kind of case you are looking for, but this Antec Nine Hundred (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811129021 ) is the same price as the P180. If you just want a basic case, this Rosewill is nice: $45 - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811147045 . I would pair it with a few Yate Loons (http://www.petrastechshop.com/12yalod1cafa.html ).
