Dumb mobo question

I'm running on an aging Socket 478 computer at the moment, and I'd love to go Core 2 Duo, and I'd love a bigger hard drive than 137GB. I figured I could get a RAID card and a couple SATA drives, but if I'm going to do that, I may as well just build a whole new computer anyway. Maybe during the summer or next winter. We'll see. Anyway, to my dumb question:

I notice some mobos have only one port for IDE devices, and the rest SATA. I know you can't boot from RAID cards, but can you boot from SATA drives if the motherboard has connections for them?

I imagine motherboards come with that one IDE port for CD/DVD devices. But I'd love to find out now by asking than later by blowing $xxx on a hard drive I can't boot from.

Thanks!

Yes, you can boot from SATA dvd drives and hard drives. Most motherboards for Intel are being made with one IDE header since SATA is becoming more and more widespread.

I don't recommend RAID either, quite honestly. Better off with the safety of one large, fast drive, such as the Seagate 7200.10.
