computer freezing

My computer keeps freezing every now and again and when i try to run a game I would get blue screens and crashes. I thought it had something to do with my video card since it was sharing a power strip with my hard drive, so i gave the video card its individual power.......that actually made it worse.
so now my computer freezes every 2 minutes or so and then it runs normal, then it freezes. what could the explanation be? could it be the power supply (generic 480w ps)? is it not enough to support the video card? (nvidia geforce 6800xt)

Have you checked your power supply in the power supply reference thread?

Check the fan

A CPU fan going bad can give that of problem. If you can drop the temp in the room 5 deg. and the computer runs longer, then a can of air may fix the problem. some times the bearing in a fan motor will just start locking up, and its hard to tell, just open the case with power off, try turning the fan. There should be a lite bump 1/4 round turn of the fan. I replace my CPU fan abuot every two or three years. and clean them about every four mouth.

Please tell us if this is a home built computer or a name brand one.

What are the complete system specs for this computer? List the parts by brand and model including the power supply.

Are you using a optical mouse? What kind of surface are you using it on? Is it white and shiny?

SPECS:
INTEL P4 2.8ghz
512 MB DDR333 PC2700 RAM
NVidia GeForce 6800XT
Generic 480W Power Supply

My optical mouse runs fine until I load up a game. It's running over a black mousepad.

Is this a home built or name brand computer?

Do you try running the computer with the sides off?

Did you check to see if the inside of the computer needs cleaning?

Replacing a generic power supply with a good quality name brand power supply is always a good investment. Generic power supplies rarely are good quality units and many tend to die and take out other computer parts when they go. And the power from these units tend to be "dirty" with lots of ripple and that can cause system instabilities. If this were my computer I would replace the power supply with a Fortron Source or Sparkle Power PSU.
