Another problem with my new build...

This one has me stumped. My new 250 Gig HDD isn't showing in Win XP. The BIOS sees it just fine, but it only shows the old 40 Gig unit that is on the 80 ribbon cable. The new HDD is hooked via SATA cable and yes, the SATA power cord is affixed.

Any clues on what to do with this one?

TIA

It has never appeared in My (Your ) Computer? No data stored on it?

There is a disk management utility in Microsoft which enables you to format the disk which indeed is necessary for Windows to see it and such.

Hope this helps.

Even if it's not formatted the bloody thing would still be seen in My Computer, I should think.... Am I being dense here? Do you mean to say that it won't show there until it's formatted?

Click Start/Run and type in diskmgnt.msc / the SATA drive should show as a non-partioned drive. If there, click on the Action from the toolbar and you can format from there.

If it is a brand new disk then it will not have a filesystem that is reconisable by Windows so it will need to be formatted.

Right button My Computer and choose Manage...in there choose Disk Management and you should see the new 250Gig drive in there. Set the partitions up and format it and it will appear in your My Computer.

You guys are fast and I appreciate it cuz I'm limited to the web cafe until Cox cable gets their act together and I didn't have much time today to surf here.

Thanks.

Nope...an unpartitioned and unformatted hard drive won't be seen in My Computer until you've gone into Disk Management to partition and format the drive.

Yep. You have to partition and format it before Windows can use it.

Well thanks, guys, for the patient supply of answers.

I got the drive partitioned and load XP onto it. There was a problem. It kept referring to itself as Win Pro when it is WIN XP Media Center and at one point it asked for XP Pro disk 2, which of course was impossible, and eventually it asked for a file on Pro disk 2 and looked for a folder called i386 which again was impossible to do, not having said disk.

So later when I tried to upload a DVD player app the installer won't function. I'm thinking the two are related. Other apps loaded fine. It gave me this error.

Anyone know how I can get the installer proggie to work right? Or perhaps suggest a good DVD playing app that's free.

Thanks!

Hmmm, IE6 doesn't seem to reproduce the image well. Hope you can see it.

Tim, XP MCE is built on the backbone of XP Pro, so that is why you are seeing that.

Have you tried updating Windows XP?

No, don't have internet access at home yet.

The OS came with SP2, does that count? Heh.

EDIT:
Think I found a movie player
