First time PC builder--no video signal and no DVD rom activity

Hey all, this is my first time building a PC. I got all the parts in earlier today and have been working all day trying to get it to work.

For a while, I was experiencing some strange problems regarding the computer powering up. The case LED lights would blink on and off and the fans would power up and down every half second or so in synchronization with the LED lights.

I eventually somehow got the computer to actually turn on and stay on. Fans stay power on and the HD light comes on and stays on.

IF I disconnect the ribbon cable that connects my DVD rom to my hard drive, then the DVD rom works. It will blink when the CPU is turned on and I am able to press its button and open it. If however I connect the ribbon cable, the DVD rom no longer shows any activity even though the HD still appears to work in that the light comes on and stays on. The HD light does not blink as if it were reading data, but I think this is normal since I have nothing written on it now.

I'm using an LCD display that has both DVI and VGA inputs. I've tried both ways and get "no signal."

What could be causing this? Let me also state that configuring the USB/LED pins was confusing, as the manual that came with the ECS motherboard was not incredibly detailed, to put it mildly.

Here are my parts:

Based on all the chaos you are describing, my mind leads to the poor quality ECS board as the problem.

Possibly, but I'm not ruling out that I configured something wrong either since this is my first time.

For the HD and DVD drives, the correct configuration is 80 wire IDE cable(blue connecter to mobo/black for the HD/gray for the DVD. Both drives should have their jumpers(next to the data cable connection) set to CS(cable select).

Well, you need to start your own topic so we can help you exclusively there. This thread belongs to Stinger911.

I'd try this and let us know when you reach trouble, in a new thread: http://forum.pcmech.com/showthread.php?t=12753
