New System, Bad Socket= Bad Fan?
Hey,
Ok heres the deal. I was building a computer for my sister as a graduation present (my third build) and encountered some issues. Fist, here are the specs: ASUS P5NSLI Mobo Intel C2D E6300 Conroe XFX 7300 GS (this sint a gaming build, just wanted to give her non onboard gfx) G.Skill 1GB stick of DDR2 533 CoolerMaster RP-550-PCAR 550W PSU ZALMAN CNPS7700-ALCU 120mm HS/Cooler for Processor OK, so I built the system in the case and put in the essentials listed above. Gave it a whirl and the system powered up, drives spun up and all that goodness, but no video and no post beep. So, I took the whole deal out of the case and did it again, still no dice. So, since my build is very similar (Same board/ Intel 930/ 7600GT), I had a test bed for all the parts. Her ram, CPU, GFX and PSU are all good, so that leaves the board. I took a look at it and noticed that the socket pins seemed to have been almost crushed Since i have the same board that works i compared and it seems that is in fact the case. The Zalman fan i was trying to use has a spring loaded frame and what I am afraid of is that the spring crushed the socket. A few questions: A- Is it possible for this fan to crush the pins on this borad with this processor? B- Is it possible/common to have these issues with mobo CPU sockets? C- Should I get another board and try the build again on the presumption that it came that way, hoping this doesnt happen again? Thanks for your help in this, and sorry for the long post ![]() -coldfront |

If the socket pins look bent, the mobo is trash. For a non-gaming system, the standard Intel heatsink would have been fine and no lose of warranty.
Are you sure that the DDR2 533 is compatible with that board? The specs at Newegg say that DDR2 667 is standard.

I am currently using the board on my rig with 2 of the same sticks that i got for my sis. I saw that to back when i upped my board, but they work great
. I just was afraid of cooking a 200$ processor for no reason. Saw reviews stating 150+F Temp readings!! Thanks for your help ![]() -coldfront |

Hey,
I am surprised to see that you say the stock HSF is any good. I have heard some really bad things regarding them in C2D systems particularly. I know that I won't lose the processor, but I want to keep this setup as low maintenance as possible as I will not be a shout away when it comes to tech support. Yes, I did do the basic check of the motherboard to ensure it wasn't grounding or anything, I believe that it was simply a bad board. I will be getting the new one tomorrow so wish me luck .-coldfront |
