Custom build
Hi I am looking to build my first computer. I want to do it part by part so I was wondering if I could buy the case then motherboard and use some of my parts from older computer i have till I buy next part. My current computer is a Sony Vaio PCV-RX860. I havnt decided on a case but the mother board I want is the EVGA Nvidia nforce 680i SLI ATX Intel. I would take the processor from the Sony which is a Pentium(R) 4 2.4GHz(if it will work with the mobo), which i would later upgrade to a Intel e6600 core 2 duo. I have a Nvidia geforce fx 5200 PCI(Sucky i know) that I want to latter upgrade to dual geforce 8800GTX. I have two 512 Mb ram, PC2100 and pc2700 that i would later upgrade to CORSAIR XMS2 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 1066. I would also take the 80GB ATA-100 HD out of the sony(if compatible) then later upgrade to the Seagate Barrucudda 7200.10 320 GB. When I buy the MOBO and Case I would buy the Hiper HPU-4M670-SS EPS12V v.291 670W Power supply. So I guess I am wondering if it would work using the older compentents from my computer till I save more money to upgrade part by part and if it would be a good gaming comp.

Well, scrap that psu, i am pretty sure its not in the recomended psu guide for reliable psus.
As for your processor, i know that E6600 prices are supposed to be slashed in Q2 2007, just after the release of its 4 core equivalant, the Q6600. As for the ram, if you are overclocking, you may want to splash out on an a cpu heatsink. Stiff DDR2 1066 is very expensive and the difference you would see with slightly slower ram would be minimal, but save you some money. You should be fine, but but remember to change the psu. |

Honestly you will be much better off in the long run if you waited a bit until you could afford all of the parts, and then buy and build your PC.
