Please Help!
Hello everyone this time last year, I built a pc thats been working great as long as I can actually get it started. Let me describe the problem:
When I press the power button the chasis fans light up and cut back off, the cpu fan doesn't turn on at all, the PSU stays on(it works fine), and the light on the mobo stays on(letting you know that there is enough power coming from the PSU). The power supply was just replaced and the cpu fan was also just replaced. The motherboard works fine and my other components also work as well (vid card and sound card, ect). Sometimes my pc will start up and work excellent until I cut it off (it can restart from the GUI, it just can't start up from a shut down..(what I'm trying to do now)). I'm beginning to think that its the cpu connection on the mobo. This is a rundown of my pc parts: 3d Aurora Case http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811233004 PLEXTOR 16X DVD±R DVD Burner Beige E-IDE/ATAPI Model PX-740A-BP - OEM http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16827131355 XFX PVT70FUND7 GeForce 7800GTX 256MB GDDR3 PCI Express x16 Video Card - Retail http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814150105 Patriot 2GB (2 x 1GB) 184-Pin http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820220040 Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi XtremeMusic 7.1 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16829102188 Western Digital Caviar SE WD2500JS 250GB http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822144417 AMD Athlon 64 X2 4400+ http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819103546 ASUS A8N32-SLI Deluxe Socket 939 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131568 I'm completely out of ideas here....please all advice is welcome. |

Which power supply are you using? Just because the motherboard standby power is lit does not indicate that the power supply is... doing what it is supposed to be doing.

Is the power button sticking in? Sometimes mine does the same thing--I have to jiggle the power button a little and try it again.

The power supply is the most common cause of these sorts of problems and since you didn't name one in your list I'm going to guess that you have some sort of generic one that does not provide the power/stability required for that system. I would recommend getting one from the recommended Power supply list.

No, the button doesn't stick. The power button makes a little noise to let you know when its pushed in and out and it always pops back out. I was also thinking that..that might be a possibility....the power button and the chasis connections.

So do you guys think I should maybe move up to a PSU that has more Watts, or is the PSU fine?

that link doesnt lead to a specific PSu anymore its a sorry we can't find your item page. If you could just put what PSU you have, I link isn't completely necessary.

It was a HiPER 580w power supply - which is plenty and pretty reputable.

You should probably do an out-of-case build to be sure it isn't just a short or a loose connection somewhere. That's something you can try before you go start buying new parts.

ok so this probably a dumb question and I'm probably gonna get flammed....... , but...forgive my amatuerish ways......do I just keep the mobo connected to the chasis and keep all the components out of the case including the PSU....or do I use some other method?

Here's a link to a really good step-by-step guide for an out of the case build
http://forum.pcmech.com/showthread.php?t=132409 Nobody is gonna flame you dude. If you knew all this stuff you wouldn't be here! Don't worry about asking questions. It's perfectly ok to be new to something or to ask if you don't know. Just stay with it and don't give up! |

So if everything powers up and works ok with the out-of-case build, then its my case connections?

If you get a succesfully out-of-case start, check the case for loose screws and that you don't have more mobo mounting stand offs than mounting holes. And that they all line up to the holes.

hmm...had another question about the out of case build.....does it matter what type of screw driver you use?...whether its regular...or magnetic?...or even some other type of material?
Everything is ready to start just this last question thats bugging me...lol. I really dont want to short out my mobo. |

Magnetic is fine. Makes holding the screws easier and does no damage.

Ok....I have completed the out of case build. But I still have the same problem. Right when I turn the mobo on both cpu fan moves and the bottom fan in my PSU move slightly. The exhaust fan on my PSU turns on and stays on along with the light. What could possibly be wrong?

Does your mobo have a 2 x 2 (4 pin)plug near the cpu? Is it plugged in?

yea the 12v connection is plugged in
Do you think its the PSU not giving off a full charge to start the pc completely? Does anyone think that it could be a bad component on my mobo thats stopping it from starting correctly?......I'm soo lost. Last edited by Yoda_101; 12-27-2006 at 11:33 PM. |
