Lil Upgrade help

Hi I have a older comp I want to upgrade a lil. I can get a ASUS P4S800D-X Socket 478 SiS 655FX ATX Intel Motherboard for like 20$. My previous Mobo is a ASUS P4S533VX SiS 962. I am thinking about this lil upgrade so I can take all stuff from old comp and switch mobo. This way I can get an agp 8x Video card instead of 4x. My old stuff will be coming out of my Sony VAIO PCV-RX860.

So I guess I am wondering if this is a smart move for like 20 dollars. I also thinkg this will be good practice for my future build that I poseted earlier.

This might be a newb question, but if I do this and switch everything out I should just be able to set up bios and be good to go right? B/C hard drives has windows and stuff already on it.

May very well be a feasible option, however do I recommend doing so? The answer is no. It will be hard to mess around in the Sony since it is going to be pretty proprietary.

You also may want to buy more thermal compound if you do have to go through all the effort for such a small performance boost.

You are also dealing with two very similar chipsets that are nothing to brag about.

All in all, I just don't think the small performance boost of an outdated AGP card is worth it. I suggest building your very own system when you have the money.

NO--you can't just move that hard drive to another board. You'll have to do a repair install of Windows, and if you don't have a system disk, which you probably didn't get with a Sony, you won't be able to do it.

My advice, leave it alone. It's going to cost you a minimum of $90.00 for a copy of Windows. That is a good motherboard and $20 is good deal for it, but those branded systems don't run on different motherboards.

It came with Recovery disk but that prob wont work with the new mobo.

I could get 1 Copy of win xp for 10.00 at my school, but I am going to buy that for my new comp build then later upgrade to vista.

If I did this it would be just to have a decent backup system for friends or for playing two games at the same time, like Diablo 2.
