New build..

Christmas is over and now I can get my new machine. Just a few questions on this one here. Any suggestions are welcomed. I am looking for value. I do not do alot of gaming but when I do I want it to run the game. I will try to link it but don't know if it will work and will post it as well.
Thanks.

Do you have a maximum budget? I would recommend a dual core system at this day and age, and if you can afford the Intel Core 2 Duo, that would also be very good.

I really would like to keep it under 1000.00 but always seem to go a couple hundred over.

For $1000 you could get something similar to the following:

A case you like
Asus P5B Motherboard
Intel Core 2 Duo E6300
1GB Corsair DDR2-667
A graphics card (not to hot on GPU's so someone else can advise you on this)
250gb Seagate 7200.10
Any high quality 500W PSU (check this thread: http://forum.pcmech.com/showthread.php?t=131195)
Retail Lite-On DVD-RW
XP Home

Is a duel core processor really that much better?

Dual cores are the way forward. It makes little sense to build a system with a single core any more. They help LOTS with multitasking, and more and more applications will be made to take advantage of two cores simultaneously.

To expand on Jimmy's list...I'd recommend 2GB of the same RAM for a gaming system. And the ATI x1950 Pro 256 MB video card is probably the best 'bang for the buck' at the moment.

what about the system I have linked with the amd duel core chip. and which one should I look at? Like I said I am not a big gammer but when I get the urge I want it to run it.

The system you specced out is fine, theoretically, but it's based on a now retired socket (939) and retired memory (DDR) that severely limits your upgrade options in the future. If you can afford to do so, Intel's Core 2 Duo is the way to go at the moment - they beat equivalently priced AMD processors in performance.

My advice would be to put together a list at Newegg with the parts that Jimmy and I recommended, and see you can't get it within your budget. It might be tough, given that you need a monitor, but it's definitely worth a try. For the record - a strong single video card like the one I suggested is the way to go over dual video cards in SLI / Crossfire, which really only makes sense for big gamers with big budgets.
