Klutz's Bro's PC

Hello

My brother wishes for a new computer and I've been helping him pick out parts, but I wanted to run the list by the folks here before purchaseing for some insight on the prospects. The parts are all selected from newegg and the budget is $850-900 including tower, monitor, keyboard and mouse. We're attempting to get the most bank for the buck.

NZXT Apollo BLACK NP Black SECC Steel Chassis ATX Mid Tower Computer Case - Retail 74.99

ASUS A8N5X Socket 939 NVIDIA nForce4 ATX AMD Motherboard - Retail 72.99

SAPPHIRE 100189L Radeon X1900GT 256MB GDDR3 PCI Express x16 VIVO HDCP Video Card - Retail 149.99

COOLER MASTER eXtreme RP-500-PCAR ATX from factor 12V V2.01 500W Power Supply - Retail 49.99

AMD Opteron 165 Denmark 1.8GHz Socket 939 Dual Core Processor Model OSA165CDBOX - Retail 153.99

CORSAIR ValueSelect 1GB (2 x 512MB) 184-Pin DDR SDRAM DDR 400 (PC 3200) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model VS1GBKIT400 - Retail 94.99

Seagate Barracuda 7200.9 ST3160811AS 160GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive - OEM 57.99

LITE-ON CD Burner Black IDE Model SOHR-5239V BK RT - Retail 18.99

This is the monitor he's decided on just probably won't get it right now, but w/in the next 2-3 weeks.

Hanns·G HW-191DPB Black 19" 5ms DVI Widescreen LCD Monitor - Retail 179.99

Totals = 848.91

You'll notice no keyboard and mouse, but he's still decideing what he wants. He has stressed to me those are not as a big of a priority as a GOOD tower and LCD

Thanks again,

Klutz

Most of the parts look good to me. I wouldn't use a Cooler Master power supply though, sketchy quality control. I'd look for a Fortron Source or Sparkle Power instead.

And I really don't know much about the Hanns-G LCD monitors but at least I haven't heard anything really negative about them.

Would a FSP Group (Fortron Source) FSP400-60THN-R ATX 400W Power Supply - Retai do it or do I need more watts?

thanks,

klutz

Sorry, but I honestly couldn't say. I'm not a gamer and I don't follow the power requirements of video cards very closely. If it wasn't for that video card I'd say a 400 watt PSU would power that system easily...but with that video card in the mix I just don't know.

I run the following on a 350 watt Fortron Source without any problems:

ASUS P4P800SE, 2.8GHz P4, 1GB (512MB X 2) Kingston ValueRAM PC3200 DDR RAM, Matrox G550 32MB, 80GB Seagate IDE HDD, 80GB Western Digital IDE HDD, Lite-On 52X CD burner, Teac 40X CD drive, Teac floppy drive.

I would bump up to the FSP 450w power supply for just about 10 bucks more - it will give you more leeway. 400w would probably power your setup, but I'd still be on the safe side.

I don't see where it says the A8N5X supports the Opteron processor, also.

Will bump the psu up to the 450w.

The A8N5X DOES support the Opteron 165. The reason I know this is - I'm using the same processor and mobo. (my sig)
