New build - my shopping list
Santa did not bring a new computer, so I need to take care of that myself. I am still looking for a new videocard - preferrable with 512 MB. I am not a hardcore gamer, but when I want to play a game I want to make sure I am ready for whatever game I pick.

Solid choices there, one note - you could switch to a LITE-ON retail DVD-RW drive, they are highly recommended and also come with burning software.
Also with the video card, do you have any preference between NVIDIA or ATI? I would personally recommend a Sapphire X1950Pro. |

Either NVIDIA or ATI should be fine. I do not really have a preference though. Your recommendation has only 256 MB RAM. I think a 512 MB card should eventually be better. The system will run Windows Vista.

I really agree with both of Jimmy0's suggestions - I'd definitely change/add those two components.
Also, drop the 500w GoodPower power supply as your case comes with a high quality one already which I think should power your system fine.

That is a superb video card that has the 512MB of memory as you asked for. It doesn't make too much sense to drop huge bucks on a card at the moment - what with DX10 on its way - but that is a great card which will play games at top graphical settings. FK

FK's suggestion would be a very strong performer, however if you needed to save a few bucks this is not too far behind: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814102061

...and I'd actually say that newbuilder14's suggestion represents more value for money. I've just ordered one for myself, in fact! The 512MB version of the x1950 pro that I linked to is obviously of higher performance, but I wouldn't say the extra 256MB of RAM was worth a $90 price increase.

The reviews on some of the Lite-on's over at Newegg are not that favorable. And the one I like is out of stock.
Good suggestion on the videocard. I think I settle for the one suggested. ![]() Christoph |

Just get any retail Lite-On drive - they are very well known for their drives. Also, seriously consider the Newegg reviews as a grain of salt - they shouldn't be used to determine purchasing.

This is christoph's thread, please stick to your own. But yes there is no comparison between a x1650pro and a x1950pro.

Why not just get a $100 256mb placeholder card till Vista and DX10 are fully implemented?
