What brand/model is your power supply?

Anyway you can be sure the motherboard supports that processor? I can't find it saying it dose on the Asus website but I always thought it did.

Okay, the next step is to check the memory. Brand and model please? Bad memory can do EXACTLY this. I have seen it done. Try one stick at a time, and if that doesn't work, do this: http://forum.pcmech.com/showthread.php?t=132409

I agree - I'd do the out of case build with each stick of memory one at a time and let us know how that works out for you.

Examine the processor by removing the HSF and checking for burn marks.

HSF= heat sink.
I would do the out of case build to make sure something isn't shorting to the motherboard or some other component.
Do a sniff test on each part to tell which is producing the smell.

Did you try doing the out-of-case troubleshooter that newbuilder14 provided a link to?

You use the screwdriver tip and momentarily touch the two PWR_ON pins that you normally connect the power button to...this will start the computer unless there are other problems preventing the computer to start up.

You are trying to see if it will boot up out of the case, if it does but does not boot up inside the case, then you know it has something to do with something shorting the motherboard (probably the standoffs).

I repeat, is the board in or out of the case? Maybe it is shorting or you have a bad motherboard.

You need to do this and only this, connect nothing else except what it says in that thread. And then report back and tell us if it displays or not.

Try plugging your CPU fan into another fan port on your motherboard - it SHOULD power the CPU fan.
