New PC

Hello. I am new to these forums, and i mostly joined because i have been thinking of building myself a computer. I have looked up different parts and im now raising the money for a computer. I figured i should have other computer *experts* look at the set up. If you notice that these parts would not go together, different suggestions for a part, or if im missing anything, it would be a GREAT help to me. Im lookin to not go much more expensive, so any new parts i need to include need to be not super expensive. Im in need of a good sound card, and i am looking from 50-100 dollars. Here are the specs, and as you can tell this is a gaming/video editing/ other big project computer. Thanks for the help in advance!

-Antec Nine Hundred Black Steel ATX Mid Tower
-Not sure what sound card (any ideas would be great)
-BFG Tech BFGR1000WPSU ATX 12V 2.2/EPS 12V 2.91 1000W Power Supply
-eVGA 768-P2-N831-AR GeForce 8800GTX 768MB GDDR3 PCI Express x16 HDCP Video Card
-2X 18X DVD Drive
-Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 320GB 3.5" IDE Hard Drive - OEM
-2X 1 gb some brand of SDRAM DDR2 800
-ECS PN2-SLI2+ (V1.0) Socket T (LGA 775) NVIDIA nForce 680i SLI ATX Intel Motherboard
-Intel core 2 extreme Quad core

I'd would go for the Seagate Sata II drive instead of IDE. I don't think the power supply you have chosen is on the recommended list. That is important.

Definitely get an SATA 7200.10 hard drive.

Get Corsair XMS2 DDR2 800 memory, 5-5-5-15 timings.

That power supply wouldn't be my choice, wait for Mr. Ferrari to come along and give you his infamous recommendations.

I would strongly suggest an Asus 680i motherboard.

Here is our brand list on Power supplies: http://forum.pcmech.com/showthread.php?t=131195

Mr. F. always has a recommendation for everyone when it comes to PSUs. I'm sure you will need plenty of power for that setup.

Definitely switch to an Asus motherboard with the 680i SLI chipset if you want SLI. ECS is a terrible quality manufacturer, and it would be a shame to use it with all those other great components.

I suggest the X-Fi XtremeMusic for soundcard.

Definately look into some good Corsair Valueselect or XMS for ram.

As the above have said, that ecs board is definately not the best around, 680i is a very new chipset and has in no way fully matured. There are still issues with its present state. However if you must use 680i then I would suggest the Asus P5N32-E SLI or the Asus Striker Extreme.

Do you really need that quad-core? Im willing to bet for your purposes you would actually get MORE performance out of a dual core. I suggest the Core 2 Duo E6700 or X6800. Current quad cores are also not really all that great. It will run hot and suck alot of juice.

I assume you plan a second 8800GTX down the road for SLi. Your BFG is definately not the greatest around. Its a low tier TOPOWER with poor stability. Here are some of my suggestions, remember, no setup would ever need 1000W:
Silverstone ST85ZF
Silverstone Olympia 1000W

I would go with the 850W. If you want to save your ears that is.

well what if i wait for the AMD quad? there saying that it will be way better than intels and it will also run with more things. And this computer is supposed to be for a long run, not just a 2-3 year comp...im hopin to get atleast 5-6 years outta this (with mods of course). so i think quad is the way to go, but thanks for the help, and keep updating me on this quad and tell me its advanteges and cons

No, actually, according to reviews and benchmarks the AMD quad cores will come nowhere near Intel quad cores and will only attract the true AMD fans. At least this is what I heard.

Quad core isn't the way to go anytime soon until the applications can all actually fully utilize dual core processors.

Do you mean AMD Quad (platform) or AMD Quad Cores? Im assuming Quad, in which case yeah 4x4 atleast not now is not the best way to get max perf. for you buck. Not to mention more power required and more heat..
