Building a gaming PC
Hello, I've been wanting to build a PC that is designed specifically for gaming. I would like to be able to max games like The Elder Scrolls : Oblivion, maybe Crysis when it comes out.
My budget is $4000+ I've been leaning towards AMD because I've heard their single core proccessors are better suited to gaming but Intel would be just as good for me. For graphics cards I'm going to be going SLI nVidia 8800 GTX's. I'm not sure which motherboard maybe a NVIDIA nForce 680i SLI Motherboard (does it support AMD or is it Intel only?) 2 GBs DDR2 Performance SDRAM preferably 1066 mhz. HDD- Maybe a 300 GB RAID 0 10,000 RPM. Maybe a PsyX Ageia card, if you guys think it will catch on. For the optical drives, I'm not interested in Blu-Ray, just a 18x DVD RW. And a liquid cooling system. Which case(I kinda like the idea of old school grey box, but if it restricts airflow, then scratch that) and PSU's would be good for this system? Thanks for your advice. |

Read through other gaming build suggestions here to get a better idea. I have to run right now but I might get back to giving you some concrete offerings later. One thing I WILL say right now though, is if you are building new, an Intel Core 2 Duo is THE processor to be using. It will blow away AMD's offerings at this time. Also, the 680i chipset you referred above is for Intel systems. Do you really need dual 8800GTX's? Unless you're using a huge monitor (24"+), you really won't need that much horsepower...that's a very powerful card. I wouldn't use Ageia either, just a personal opinion. I don't believe that card will survive as video card manufacturers incorporate that into their offerings.

I would look into the other threads as well and put together a Core 2 Duo build for yourself using an E6600/E6700. Also use an Asus 680i motherboard with 2gb of Corsair XMS2 memory.

If you must have SLI, wait a while till the 680i bugs are fixed or go with AMD.
