having problems with 1st build

I built my new computer but it shuts down after a few seconds everytime I turn it on. All the lights go on, everything's working fine (maybe I missed something that I dont know of). Has this ever happened to anyone. I need help ASAP. Thx

its most likely either a overheating problem or a faulty/insufficent PSU. Is your Heatsink/fan installed correctly? make sure it is latched on tightly to the processor and you applied a small amount of thermal paste. Also, what PSU do you have and what is the wattage on it?

My processor came with a small heatsink/fan, but have not applied thermal paste.

My PSU is a (Xclio X14S4T4) and the wattage is 600W

The heatsink probably has a small thermal pad on the bottom...or is it bare? Make sure you have some type of thermal paste applied before trying to boot it up out of the case.

Also, some detailed system specs would be helpful.

CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E6600
Motherboard: ASUS P5B-E
PSU: Xclio X14S4T4 600W ATX 12V
HDD: Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 (Perpendicular Recording) w/fan
Videocard: SAPPHIRE 100189L Radeon X1900GT 256MB 256-bit
Memory: CORSAIR Value Select 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM

Those are the main pieces of hardware. I also have a 120mm case that is attached to the PSU. When I turn the computer on all of the lights go on and all of the fans work, but a second latter it just turns off. I took off the CPU heatsink and fan and I am going to replace the heatsink. I don't think it was the PSU because I checked the power requirements and there is more than enough for my computer. Any recommendations on what type of heatsink or heatpad to get? Thanks

The stock heatsink is plenty adequate. You just have to install it properly. You need to use a layer of thermal interface material - it came with the heatsink - and all 4 pins have to snap firmly into the holes before you twist and lock them. This needs to be done with the motherboard removed from the case.

Well I took the computer to Bestbuy yesterday and someone helped me out. He looked at it and tried hooking up another power supply and low and behold it worked. It turns out that my power supply unit: XCLIO GREATPOWER X14S4P4 600W ATX12V 600W Power Supply 100-240V / 200-240V UL, CUL, TUV, CB, VDE, FIMKO, DEMKO, NEMKO, SEMKO didn't come with a 4 pin +12V plug. So I am going to have to RMA this thing and get another one. I am just wondering if my power supply unit should have come with it and they screwed up when they out it together or was it my mistake? I thought every power supply came with a 4 pin and a main ATX power connector. That PSU should have had the 4 pin plug. Looks like there is an 8 pin plug that comes a part to make 2 4 pin plugs.

Review #10 from the NewEgg site for this PS:

No 4-pin power connector -- no problem

Pros: Great power output, 4 12v rails! So far so good. If all it's specs prove to be true, this sucker rocks.

Cons: Doesn't come with the standard 4-pin power to plug into your motherboard!!! But, I e-mailed customer service about it after noticing the the 8-pin server power can be seperated...and sure enough, that's what you're supposed to do - seperate the 8-pin power into 2 4-pin connectors. One of them fits the right way. If you check out their webpage you can see a picture of it on the 600W and up PSUs (they added the picture after I talked with them--that's pretty cool) Doesn't come with a fan monitor connector.

Other Thoughts: I haven't had the PSU that long, but it's specs look great and I haven't had any problems with it - other than the bonehead mistake of not putting something in their manual or on their webpage about the 8-pin power.

Interesting - then what is the picture I linked of? I see a 20+4, a 6 pin PCI-E, and a 4 pin all on the main harness. That pic is one in the gallery for that power supply.

Guessing that whoever took the pictures (whether Newegg or Xclio themselves) separated the 8-pin connector into two 4-pins, showing only one of them in the photo - maybe to avoid the type of confusion that's happened here.

I imagine this will become more and more common as more PSUs provide an 8-pin connector.

There is a separate picture of a separated 8 pin connector - remember this is a modular PSU.
