HDD problem during OS installation?

First time builder here. So I've successfully built the computer, entered BIOS setup and all that. However, I was unable to detect the HDD through the "auto-detect" feature. When I'm attempting to install Win XP, I recieve a message saying the following (LINUX [Ubuntu] just goes blank):

Check for viruses on your computer. Remove any newly installed hard drives or hard drive controllers. Check your hard drive to make sure it is properly configured and terminated. Run CHKDSK /F to check for hard drive corruption, and then restart your computer.

Technical information:

*** STOP: 0x0000007B (0xF78D2524,0xC0000034,0x00000000,0x00000000)

I did end up getting an entirely new HDD with SATA/300 instead of ATA-100. I recieved this message on both HDDs. The message comes up when installing Win XP, though when trying to install LINUX (Ubuntu) instead, it just goes blank until I shut it down. It looks like it's installing fine, the message occurs when it claims to be starting XP.

MB: MSI P965 Neo-F Intel Socket 775 ATX Motherboard
HD1: Seagate - ATA-100
HD2: Seagate - SATA/300
Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo E6300 1.86GHz
RAM: Corsair Dual Channel TWINX 2048MB PC6400 DDR2 800MHz Memory (2 x 1024MB)
Video Card: EVGA GeForce 7600 GS / 512MB GDDR2

Any advice or anything I can be checking for would be greatly appieciated. This has been bugging me for a few days now.

CRASH

OK, so I was looking around and came across this thread: http://forum.abit-usa.com/showthread.php?t=1898
It sounds as if this is the same problem I am having, though I'm a bit confused as to what the solution was. Can any explain?

EDIT: this link isn't what I meant to post... and now I can't find the real one... awesome.

well, it's been running for three hours already. Is the MemTest supposed to take this long... not that I'm anxious or anything... no errors, thus far.

Sleepied eyed... hope it'll be done when I wake up...

It runs till you stop it. If you get a few passes with no errors, the ram is good.

well, the MemTest shows the RAM is good. I had my telephone-operating engineer father check it out yesterday - no progress. We checked out the article you've provided, though I can't say it helped much. Trying to find out if I need to find a Microsoft-compatible driver as the Microsoft article suggested.

For some reason the CD/DVD drive cannot be assigned a letter. I'm unsure how to do this manually and don't know if this has anything to do with what is going on or not, so I thought I'd bring it up. Anymore advice / tips would still be helpful, thx.

Just for clarification, exactly what is the physical setup of the system you have noted?

Are both HDDs installed at the same time and producing these errors? Or are you trying one, then the other?

What connection are you using for your optical drive?

What are the IDE device(s) set up as? (Cable Select/Master/Slave)

Just trying to get at if there is some conflict or setup issue between your drives.

I would also look into the BIOS issue mentioned by the MS article. HOw recent is yours, and is there an update?

Quote:
If you receive one of these error messages while you are installing Windows XP, update the computer BIOS or obtain Windows XP drivers for your hard disk controller (from the manufacturer of your computer, system board, or hard disk controller), or do both. For information about how to update your computer's BIOS or obtain Windows XP drivers, contact your computer manufacturer. For additional information about the availability of drivers, see the Device Driver Issues section in this article.

I first tried the IDE HDD and CD/DVD drives both jumpered as Cable Select, with the HDD in the black master pins with the CD/DVD drive in the gray slave pins (Mobo only has 1 IDE channel). Took out the IDE HDD and inserted the Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 SATA HDD and tried to set the CD/DVD-drive once as slave, once as master.

I never attempted to install both HDDs at the same time, but I recieve the error no matter which one is currently connected.

How recent is what? BIOS is claiming the HDD is setup as the primary master (though the CD/DVD drive is missing from BIOS...)

How recent is the BIOS on your mobo?

Did you try clearing the CMOS (either with battery removal or jumper)?

It's weird, but the manual I could find for MSI P-965 Neo boards doesn't mention using Cable Select, page 2-12 of the manual available online at TigerDirect (the first place I could find it) has no mention of Cable Select, and instead states:

Quote:
IDE1 can connect a Master and a Slave drive. You must configure the second hard drive to Slave mode by setting the jumper accordingly.
and then says

Quote:
If you have two hard drives on a cable, you must configure the second drive to Slave mode by setting its jumper.
http://static.tigerdirect.com/pdf/MS...ies_Manual.pdf

I have no idea why this would affect the SATA/IDE combination, and I don't know why they don't mention Cable Select as a setup option, but it's worth a try setting the jumpers differently.

I'll put the cd/dvd drive into master mode for now. Just cleared the CMOS and am about to turn the system back on... wiill report back in a few minutes...

FEW MINUTES LATER...
wow, kinda scared me for a moment. When I turned it back on, a light that I had never noticed before flashed as the whole system turned on and quickly shut down. It turned itself back on 2 seconds later though, declaring CMOS had successfully been reset. Setup has started... and has gone further than ever before! It looks like re-setting CMOS has done it!

I'm curious as to what exactly re-setting CMOS did though and why'd you think of doing that?

Thanks for the help! I'm ever grateful as I'm moving in 2 days and wanted to bring the completed system with me.
