Troubleshooting Question!

What I would like to know,is what is the least amount of parts you need in a computer for it to boot?Even a little.I know this might sound like a strange question, but I think it would help me alot in troubleshooting.I know that if you don't have any RAM,it will beep, but what about no CPU,ETC?Does this go the same for laptops too?Thank You very much!

Motherboard, 1 stick of RAM, CPU, & a video card (all hooked to the power supply, of course).
