New Computer

OK im thinking about building my own computer. There has been a lot of controversy aobut the quads not doing so well. I mostly want to know if any of this wont work together (like size) and everyones thoughts about the quad core. Everyone last time i posted gave me different ideas for the power supply, but im trying to keep it this price or lower, so dont give me something thats another 200 extra bucks (50-100 max) thanks for the help

Antec Nine Hundred Black Steel ATX Mid Tower
-Not sure what sound card (any ideas would be great)
-BFG Tech BFGR1000WPSU ATX 12V 2.2/EPS 12V 2.91 1000W Power Supply

-2X 18X DVD Drive
-Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 320GB 3.5" IDE Hard Drive - OEM
-2X 1 gb some brand of SDRAM DDR2 800
-ECS PN2-SLI2+ (V1.0) Socket T (LGA 775) NVIDIA nForce 680i SLI ATX Intel Motherboard
-Intel core 2 extreme Quad core

Not a terrible start, but some changes need to be made.

Power supply: Nothing needs 1000w, get a unit of lesser wattage that gives you a cleaner flow of power - such as one from Seasonic or Silversone

Video Card: I like eVGA cards, so you could check those out as well.

DVD Drives: Nothing to really say about them, retail is better so you get software.

Hard drive: Right model, wrong interface. You want an SATA hard drive for much better performance.

Memory: Okay, good, I recommend Corsair XMS2 DDR2-800 memory (CL5).

Motherboard: Not at all an area to disregard. ECS has a terrible reputation for making bad motherboards. You want an Asus P5B series. Why SLI? From what I am told it is mostly a marketing gimmick - the 8800GTX card can alone play any game on the market and those to come. Get a much stabler Intel chipset.

Processor: If you are over budget, why not drop down to a Core 2 Duo E6600 or even E6700 to make the necessary upgrades feasible - right now quad cores do not present much of a benefit with today's applications still written to utilize single (though quite a few are dual core based now I believe) core processors.

Good, but you really should still get rid of that power supply - it is definitely not quite there when you factor in requirements and price/performance.

Also, the hard drive - did you choose and SATA one - that is basically necessary nowadays - the future is SATA.

Edit: That's a good power supply but I don't know if it is enough for SLI'd 8800GTX cards. Mr. Ferrari knows that for sure. Check here for reference: http://www.slizone.com/object/slizon..._powersupplies

He's right. There's not that much out there that will allow the Quad Core to use it's full potential. They are a total waste of money at this point in time. An E6600 is what you need. A SEAGATE 7200.10 16mb PRT 250GB Hard Drive is a good choice. If you're only planning on using one video card, a PC POWER & COOLING SILENCER 610 is an excellent choice. It has a hefty and stable 49 amp Single Rail and will deliver exactly what you need at any time. P5B is a good board. Good luck. Edit: This was supposed to go in a couple notches up!

Looking at the requirements I learned that the minimum suggested wattage for dual 8800GTX cards is 750w (Silverstone). Good luck.

Yes, that is a great power supply. Everything else looks good.

Just want to make sure that you changed your hard drive to the SATA version here:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822148140

And that you considered this video card as well:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814130072

You're all set (in my mind, may want to wait for others, though), good luck.

There's one thing about the case. The 900's a great case, from most reviews, but it is a mid-tower and, while it fits, I have seen some state that the 8800GTXs are a little bit tight in those cases. In this review: http://www.extremetech.com/article2/...2071178,00.asp, they noted needing to rotate a floppy bay in order to get the 8800GTX card to fit, in addition to some other close-quarters maneuvering.

Also, check out the views on newegg, particularly the top, where the "front" I/O panel is. I bring this up because I was looking at this case until then (and the fit issues). Since my system goes under my desk, buttons and I/O on the top of the case are much less favorable.

As GLC said, SLI and Intel have never worked out, the Intel chipsets are much stabler and recommended for new builds. The P5B Deluxe seems to be a popular board.

Good point, Mevenson.

No, you would need a 680i SLI motherboard for dual 8800GTX cards - who in the world needs that, though? You'd really need like a 32" monitor to take advantage of that.

Your case may work fine. There are some nice Thermaltake full tower cases.

DVD: retail Lite-on(comes with burning software)
Sound card: X-Fi Music
Cases: Look at other Antecs/Lian-Li/Silverstone/CoolerMaster/Chinming. Go to Newegg and use their case search for the size/style/color/etc that you like.
An input and output fan should be enough, for starters.

I just finished my build with that case, and I love it. It is a big boy, but you've got a ton of room inside. The case isn't 100% toolless, but it's not that bad (you'll probably need a screwdriver to mount some of your drives). It's a clean look, not much in the way of lighting, etc (stock). It comes with three case fans (one 120 input, one 120 rear exhaust, one 80 top exhaust) and has potential locations for many more, plenty of other ventilation.

My 8800 fit with plenty of room to spare.

One nice feature about the case, it can be converted to BTX if needed, if and when that takes over as a standard. It can also accomodate a second PSU, if needed.

For looks, the newegg pictures are pretty accurate, they just don't convey the size of the beast

http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16811119042

One curious feature, you'll notice six USB ports on the front. I only have 4 active because my mobo (and most others) do not have connections for 6 front USB ports (that I have found).
