Very frustrated ....need help
I got my computer shipped from the states out here to okinawa japan where i am currently stationed. Well, as you can probably imagine, it didn't get here in one piece even after the numerous "fragile" and "this side up" stickers. I have it insured which is a good thing but i still have some questions becuase i'm going to need to fix it. The black bracket that is around the cpu, the bracket that you use to hold down your cpu cooler, is broken into 2 pieces.
![]() Is this possible to replace this or is this part of the motherboard meaning i would have a buy a new MB? Does this piece come with any cpu coolers (i've never seen it)? There are more problems but some that i think i can resolve myself. Last edited by itsmeryanb; 01-12-2007 at 02:32 AM. |

Thanks for the information glc! At least i know that its possible to replace. I just hope that the small computer store carries that. Shipping stuff over here to japan usually takes about 2 1/2 to 3 weeks to get out here.

You can also see those oversized capacitor things (i don't know the name) beside the retention module are bent pretty badly. Would it be safe to bend those back to their original position without them snapping?

You may want to replace the motherboard to be safe.

I've had this computer up and running before. Had it sent to me over here in japan. The heatsink retention frame came broken so i replaced it with a new heatsink. Did out of box install and all fans work, no beeping, and no display. I've checked and rechecked the cpu, video card, and RAM are seated properly. I've tried DVI to HDMI on both DVI ports of the video card, and i have tried VGA. Please help....im getting very frustrated.

Well, i just checked my graphics card in my friends computer to see if it worked and it just made a beeping noise....no display. I'm guessing my graphics card is dead. I didn't get a beeping noise on my motherboard when i started it up with the graphics card connected. Does this mean my motherboard is done too!?

You could easily have a damaged socket.

Please keep it in your original thread. I'll merge them.
The last time I had this happen - a heatsink came loose in shipment - it ripped up the retention frame, destroyed the video card, and busted motherboard caps. Hindsight is wonderful - you should stuff the case full of bubble wrap to ship a computer with a heatsink installed. Last edited by glc; 01-13-2007 at 11:50 AM. |

I'd file a claim for a motherboard and a video card. If you turned the computer on with the heatsink loose, you may have cooked the CPU too.

So with all these symptoms, do you think i would be fine with buying a new video card and motherboard? Is there a way to check to make srue that i don't have to replace my harddrive, cpu, and RAM?

The only way would be to get a hold of another system to test them in. Perhaps a friend or neighbor. Otherwise, you could take the parts to a computer shop and asked to have them tested.

Ok well i replaced my mother board and graphics card and its now working! Well, my Sony Bravia 26S2000 has a native resolution of 1366 x 768 and my nvidia 7950gt doesn't show that as an option. It kinda looks like crap right now. What do i need to do to fix this? When i hook up the tv to my hp laptop, it automatically lists 1366 x 768 as an option.

Try the latest drivers for the video card. What do the display properties identify the monitor as?

I didn't see any drivers for the specific video card but i downloaded the ones that said "geforce drivers". There were no drivers for tv/monitor. Its identified as a plug and play.

If it's identified as a plug and play, it should work. The generic drivers from nvidia.com should work too.

Can you get 1280x768? If so, set the wide mode to "normal" in the PC settings in the TV's control panel.

it was not on widescreen and it still looks horrible. It gives options for 800 x 600, 1024 x 768, 1280 x 720, 1600 x 900, and 1920 x 1080. But it still doesn't give me the option for the native resolution of my screen. It also won't let me use VGA. When hooked up by VGA, it will display the very first Asus and windows logo, but then my t.v. just says "Unsupported signal Adjust your PC output"
