Unhappy Problems with my computer....yes, again :(

well my computer is up and running and seems to be doing perfectly fine...but there are two issues.

1) *sometimes* when i turn my computer on it says it has found a new device (my creative x-fi platinum), and it does not have drivers installed. Well...it I restart it once or twice, it somehow finds those drivers and the x-fi works perfectly. How can windows not find drivers sometimes, then find them the next time.

2) also, when I start certain apps (games), or insert any install disc the computer siezes up and EVERYTHING frezes, ive had the task manager open when i've done this and the performace charts freze too. but again...this happens *sometimes*. It's really odd.

Any help on either of these???

THANKS

i would run memtest 86 because it sounds like a memory problem. Also ensure that all drivers for the board and videocard are up to date and correct.

Ive run memtest sooo many times. Also, the board drivers and video card drivers are fine. The actually system freezes, not just the screen (I know this because the LCD on my G15 freezes as well)

Try unplugging 1 of the DVD drives and make sure the jumpers are set to CS. May have a conflict between the two DVD drives. Also run HD diagnostics to eliiminate a possible HD problem.

ok, but one DVD goes into an SATA port (used rosewill converter), and other goes to IDE. Should they both be set to CS?

(and im going to be so furious if its the HD...this is my 3rd one)

Unplug the DVD using the SATA converter.

Why are you using a converter? That board has 2 native IDE channels.

It does? one of them says floppy next to it (can i use that), I have an extra IDE cable so if I can that you be great.
Also here are the temps that speedfan collected:
System 45C
CPU 32C (x6800)
Video 59C (x1950xtx)
HD 30C (Raptor 150GB)
HD 30C (7200.10 320GB)

Also: Someone was saying that a bad PSU could be killing my HDs. Well all of the volatages are fine, except the +12V is at 12.46. Is that a problem?

12.46 is within tolerance, that's only about a 4% overvoltage. Put that system under load and I'm, sure it'll go down.

See here: http://images10.newegg.com/NeweggIma...131-025-04.JPG

Your IDE channels are under the PCI slots and next to the ATX 24-pin power connector.

What version drivers are you using for the videocard?

On the IDE.
There is only one IDE, the other is a Floppy Connector (can i use that for an optical)?

The Drivers are ATI drivers:
Version: 8.282.0.0 (Should I update them)

ATI posted a new catalyst, and new drivers on January 10th, these are from August 8th. I'm just going to update them...

Your board should have two. There is a black one next to your last pci slot, and a blue one inverted by the power connector. And no you cannot use the FDD slot.

I would first try to connect the drive natively.

I wouldn't worry about the video card drivers.

Okay, I will connect it via IDE. But i doubt that that is what is making my computer run so slowly, even with 0%-3% of the CPU active.

Here are some temps after the system had been on for a while:
System 50C
CPU 39C
Video 63C
HD 36C (Raptor)
HD 26C (7200.10)

Air temp is 84.2F in the room...but those temps seems a wee bit high.

Please...I really don't get why it is loading programs so slowly. I'm going to run HD diags soon.
Whats weird is that once loaded into the RAM...blazing fast. But until then...

Connect both of your optical drives to the blue IDE connector (the black one is a JMicron EIDE controller which requires separate IDE drivers to be installed...and a note in the manual says it doesn't support ATAPI devices or optical drives). Make sure that the drive jumpers are set correctly for the type of IDE cable you're using. CS if you're using a 80 wire IDE cable and master/slave if you're using a 40 wire IDE cable.

In fact, try connecting just one optical drive for now and see how the system performs. If it still seems sluggish, try the other optical drive by itself. A defective optical drive can hamper system performance.

And also make sure the opticals are running in DMA mode and not PIO (check in Device Manager).

Alrighty, thanks cricket.
..But how do I connect them both to the same connector? Do you mean on cable with both drives on it, or am I missing something here?

You connect them both to the same connector by using both of the ends of the IDE cable. You will have to accordingly jumper your drive (Cricket said put them both to CS if you have an 80-wire cable which I think you do).

Well, actually I just have two single IDE cables, but one does come with the board that has 3 IDE ports. I'll just use that for testing purposes.

Thanks
