Very First Build For Me- Comments?
Hello,
After years of debating, I have decided to build my first PC and I've tried to do some research on my own and I think I've come up with a reasonable attempt on my first try. Does anone have suggestions on whether this is alright. Basically it's going to be a gaming machine with an eye toward future expanability. Does it fit that profile? Case: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811144089 PSU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817194004 Mobo: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131013 CPU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819103747 HDD: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822136003 RAM: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820145590 Video Card: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814133188 Optical 1: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16827151136 FDD: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16821104104 So that's it. Like I said, I tried to make sure everything worked. Anyone have any suggestions whether some things I don't need or do need. Another optical? Less RAM? If you have a suggestion, please give a reason. I appreciate the help. |

Well.. you've done your research and all your parts are compatible, BUT:
The Intel Core 2 Duo processors currently on the market blow by the AMDs now - in gaming and everyday tasks - the Core 2 Duos are just faster. With this in consideration, would you mind possibly switching to a Core 2 Duo system by switching the motherboard to an Asus P5B and the processor to a Core 2 Duo E6300 or E6600? Everything else looks okay. Samsung drives are just okay (we recommend Lite-On retail boxes) and I would choose an eVGA video card over the PNY.

OEM DVD burners do not come with software - get a retail box.
If you want AMD, those components are fine. However, a E6300 system will blow it away. Any particular reason you chose a SLI board? |

the core duos are going to drop in price real soon and the 4xxx with a 500fsb is a killer overclocker and will be cheap.

Thanks, for the info. No reason for me choosing an SLI board. Just happened to pick it. Is it a bad idea? Will there be compatibility issue with other components by switching my motherboard and the CPU?
Once again, appreciate the help. Saves time, and potentially money and headaches. |

Nope - all those will be compatible with a P5B series and a Core 2 Duo.
SLI boards are for running two Nvidia video cards for squeezing out the last bit of gaming performance. It is not cost effective at all, the performance boost is very nominal, not even close to 50%. |

Excellent, I'll change that then.
So... This motherboard - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131045 This CPU - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819115003 in replacement for the above. That'll work? |

I'll make those changes. Another thing. Is the video card overkill? I could get a 7950 but I wanted the performance. Is it worth it to spring for the 8800?

For a gaming rig you want to have the best video card you can afford. Gamers never think a high end video card is over-kill.

If you have any future plans of upgrading to DX10, do not buy a high end DX9 card now. Just be prepared, like you are, with a beefy power supply (which I do not know if it will power a 8800GTX or not, but more than likely a 8800GTS).
