New build and Asus P5B and ide

Greetings
I am building a new pc from scratch with the following components:
Asus p5b-e ; c2d E6300; 2gig kingston memory;WD 150 gig raptor ; 320 gig Seagate(more storage) Saphire X1900 GT; SB Audigy 4 and a Samsung IDE dvd burner with XP Pro sp2 as the OS.

I want to be able to connect the IDE channel to the burner and then in the future add another IDE drive to the system from my old pc to transfer music, pictures, etc to the Seagate. I don't plan on using a floppy drive for the new build at all. I won't be using raid.

I want to know if this will work for a fresh install of XP Pro. How shoud I go about setting the jumpers for the burner and then eventually for the added IDE hard drive? Do I need to get a floppy drive as well? Do I need to get a SATA dvd burner for this build instead of an IDE? I have read some other threads on this but haven't quite seen a direct answer there.

Any help is appreciated.
MH

You can connect 2 IDE devices to the controller. Use the 80 wire cable and jumper both devices to Cable Select. Connect the master device to the end connector and the slave device to the middle connector.

You should not need a floppy drive but it would not hurt to have one with a cable available just in case. You don't have to mount it in the case. You can rob one out of an old computer if necessary. XP should install simply by booting with the CD.

Thanks GLC
I appreciate your response. This is a first build for me in quite a while. I got the machine to boot to bios this am and will load the OS via dvd drive later today. After I get all of the components installed, I was considering just leaving the old IDE drive in the new build. I thought I read in another thread that there could be a performance lag with the burner if both of these are on the same channel. Something like the DVD would take twice as long to burn, etc. Could you give your input about this (or anyone else of course).
Thanks

Don't add the old drive until you have the system up and loaded with all of your software.

I will wait until all other stuff is done. Do you know if the dvd will take longer to burn, etc, with the drive left in the machine?

Only if the files you are burning are located on the IDE drive. If they are on the SATA drive, there will be no effect.
