LAN problem with Asus P5B Deluxe
Here are the parts I have used:
Motherboard: Asus P5B Deluxe CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E6300 RAM: Corsair DDR2-800 XMS2-6400 Video Card: eVGA e-Geforce 7600 GT KO PCI express 256MB Hard Drive: Seagate Barracuda 320GB SATA Power Supply: Corsair HX Series 520W DVD Drive: Liteon OS: Windows XP Pro This is my first build and everything went together very well (with many thanks to all of you for your buy suggestions). The computer works great with the exception of the LAN. Neither network connection will work. I have used the latest BIOS and network driver from the ASUS website. I have tried connecting directly to my cable modem and I have no connectivity. I am using IE from the Windows Pro install CD. I then plug in my laptop to the cable modem and it works great. It seems to me the onboard LAN is dead. I do not have a NIC available to try. Is there any way to test the onboard LAN? Does anybody have any suggestions? Thank you very much for any help. |

You have to take the power off the cable modem for 20 minutes to do a MAC reset if you are moving it to a different computer.

It also will not connect when I put the ethernet cable into an open port on my linksys router. I tested the same port on the router by plugging in a laptop using the same cable and it works (I turned off the wireless on the laptop before connecting).
I will try removing power from the cable modem for at least 20 minutes before connecting the new build directly. Thanks again for the advice. |

This is may seem silly--and probably paltry because my experience level pales in comparisson--but double check that the LAN is enabled in BIOS. You never know, hope it helps!

Not silly at all - we all can overlook the basics and you don't know till you ask!

The deluxe has dual LAN ports-- probably need to configure that properly. See what your device manager says. Look for question marks over the devices.

I unplugged the power to the cable modem for a couple of hours before connecting the new build but still could not connect.
The BIOS shows the onboard PCIE GbE LAN_1 [Enabled]. The next option below that is: LAN Option ROM [Disabled]. I have tried rebooting with this enabled as well, with no change. Next is: Onboard PCI LAN_2 [Enabled]. Same option below that one: LAN Option ROM [Disabled]. I have tried changing all of these options. I have put the ethernet cable into both ports with still no connection. It tries to acquire a network address for a while then I get the no connectivity message. Any other ideas???? |

This is my first try at building a computer and I really appreciate all of the help and advice from all of you that know so much more than I do.
I want to avoid sending something back unless I know it is defective. With my limited knowledge it seems the onboard LAN is not working. Unless anybody has a suggestion, I will send back the motherboard for a new one. Thanks again. |

If you see the LAN icon in the task tray, then the driver is probably installed. Go into device manager and see if there are any exclamation points.

I turned off the Windows firewalll and now it works. I don't understand why this is but it is better than not working at all. I am currently connected to my Linksys router.

The Windows firewall probably needs to have some things enabled in the exception list.

Thank you very much for everybody's help. I wanted to leave this reply for anybody doing a search on a similar problem in the future. Once I turned off Windows firewall, it connected right up. After downloading all of the updates to XP Pro I was then able to turn the firewall back on without any problems.
