Slow Boot

Ok I just finished building this PC 500MHz Pentium but every time it boots it stops for a while after detecting the mouse and keyboard, then finally it detects the hard drive and cdroms and move on.

It is really a very slow process till it finally detects the hd and cdroms.

In the bios I do not see anything that make sense that I can set apart from all I already did.

But I do notice in the bios under boot
4th Boot Device Network Card
5th Boot Device MBA UNDI (Bus0 Slow15)

I do not see a way of disabling these devices.

It's a Phoenix Bios. I can get version etc. if needed..

Any help appreciated.

Thanks
Dave

Is the network card connected to a network? If a network card isn't connected to anything it'll slow down the boot process while the BIOS waits for a network to be found.

Can you remove the network card from the boot order?

Nothing in the bios to allow me to remove it.

Just how long does it take this computer to boot to the Windows desktop?

When I had a PIII 600MHz with 512MB of RAM it would take about a minute and a half to boot to WinXP Home desktop.

After detecting the keyboard/mouse it takes approximately one minute to detect the HD then about another 30 seconds or more to detect the CD ROM.

Then boot is normal after that.

The delay is only between the kb/mouse and cdrom detection

What is the story on the HDD? Make, model, age and previous problems might help.

Please post the complete system specs for this computer. List the parts by brand and model including the power supply.

Have you checked the jumpering on both the HDD and the optical drive? If you're using 40 wire IDE cables the drive jumpers should be set to master. If you're using 80 wire IDE cables the drive jumpers should be set to CS. Blue connector to motherboard, black to drive and grey should be empty unless you have other IDE drives in there.

Have you tried replacing the IDE cables?

Have you tried booting up with the optical drive disconnected?

None at all. Formatted ok, no bad clusters or anything. Prior scandisk ok.

WD136AA 13.6GB [Older model]

Not sure the age. Recently bought it used with a system.

What type of cable is the HDD on (40 or 80 wire) and how is it jumpered and connected? Same question pertains to the CD drive.

Hint - if a WD is the only drive on a cable, it has to be jumpered CS or the jumper must be removed - depending on the type of cable. It cannot be jumpered master OR slave.
