First problem with build - dvd

The dvd drive I got for my new system build is DOA - no power up. Upon further review I noticed the model I got was E-IDE (lite-on 20x). I've got the ASUS P5B (vanilla version). Is the problem:

a) I'm an idiot and should have gotten the IDE version?

or

b) E-IDE works fine with IDE socket and the drive is the problem?

I've got the system working with a spare CD-ROM, so I know I had the DVD hooked up right.

B

But before you return it, is your jumper set to cable select if it is the only drive? Is it recognized in BIOS?

The jumper is set to master. It is the only ide drive connected. I hooked the cable as instructed by the p5b manual when hooking up only one drive (color coded for the technology challenged!).

Forgot to answer your other question: No not recognized in BIOS - no drive shows up. No power either - the door won't even open.

Yeah - I tried reseating the plug a half dozen times to no effect. When I put in the CD drive, same plug, same IDE ribbon, it started up first time.

Try jumpering the drive to cable select, and if that doesn't work, you are dealing with a dead drive probably.

If it's not spinning or lighting up, I dunno if CS will cause it to do so. Lite-On is a solid brand, tho. I'm pretty sure you'd be safe getting a replacement. Where did you purchase?
