Second Build (Dad's Turn)

Hi all, still waiting for XP Pro to show up so i can finish my first build (my computer), but i've been bitten by the bug, and am putting the parts list together for a computer for my dad. He is currently using my old system which is running very slow, and not very stable. So a late Christmas gift....
As far as usage, it will be very light, just web surfing (looking at his stocks online and stock research) and a little office work, so nothing too demanding. And definitely no gaming. So i'm thinking of a middle of the road AMD build with a little room for upgrading. This is what i've looked at so far.....

MOBO:

GPU:

CPU:
http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16819103029

MEMORY:

HDD:
http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16822135106

OPT DRIVE:
http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16827106992

He won't be burning any DVD's, doesn't need much HDD storage space, but something that can get him around the internet reasonably fast....whatdaya think?
Thanks in advance....

Everything looks good, but switch to this motherboard with onboard video: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131040 and this processor: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819103733

Honestly, I would go with a Pentium D system that can upgrade to a Core 2 Duo but that's just me.

check out the C2D e4300 that just released. The C2D e6300 is also a cheap alternative that wont leave your dad in a position to have to upgrade as soon. The end product would only be about $100-$200 more but will leave him future proof for at least 5 years i would say.

edit: wait a month and the C2D will drop about 40% . . .

If your on a budget go 939, if not I would suggest against AM2.

A intel build would be a good option. Just swap the motherboard out for a P5L-MX ~$75 and pick a Pentium D 915.

I highly suggest you stay away from turbocache, go with this videocard instead: Asus X1300.

That's Genius! I'm going Intel, and when it's time for him to upgrade, i can give him the Core 2 Duo E6600 I just ordered, when i'm ready to go to something else. Thank you for making that suggestion.... ok, here is an update, again, please let me know what you think....

Yes, definitely trying to stick with a budget, should have mentioned, of about $500 for this one...I'm getting that lower end Pentium D to last him a year or two and then i'll pop my Core 2 Duo in there for him....I think the motherboard will handle both?

Drop the video card and get the Asus P5L-MX - I have used it in 3 builds and have had not one problem. Only downside is it has 2 memory slots.

Ok, how about this... I went a little higher on the Mobo, I'd like him to have 4 memory slots...

Again, very light usage all around, and the chip is meant to get him by for a while until i can upgrade him to a Core 2 Duo... Your thoughts???

How much more can you play with? I have some suggestions. Can you justify a DVD burner? Can you justify an Asus P5B-VM or an Intel DG965RY? If you have to cut costs back after that, just toss a Celeron-D in there for now, it's still a decent processor for an office box. The G965 video is a lot better than the 945G, and it's more upgradeable down the road.

The power supply in that Rosewill case is rubbish, by the way. You are better off getting a Foxconn TS-1, they should be back in stock any day now. The front USB ports in the Rosewill block the floppy bay according to one review.

(I'm sticking with the DVD Rom, he's never burned a disk and probably won't start now)
The Foxconn case looks nice, but is 300Watts enough?

Some of your links are broken, you can't just drag to copy them out of another post, you have to right click and copy the actual location.

300 watts is PLENTY for onboard video - I've even used that case to run a X700 PCI-E card.
