Core 2 Duo E6600, Asus P5B Deluxe, and a filler video card such as a 7600GS until the DX10 dust clears. Corsair XMS2 DDR2-800 CAS5, Seagate 7200.10 SATA.

Cpu: Intel Core 2 duo inthe E6600 or if hardcore: Extreme x6800
Ram: Corsair XMS DDR2 800 cas5 in a 2gig kit
Video card: Nvidia 8800GTX (going Sli with these probably break the budget)
HD: Seagate 7200.10 pick your size.
Monitor: at least a 24"
Case: find a style you like at Newegg.
Motherboard: Asus P5B series/pick on for the options you want.
These are some general picks/once you have specfic brands and models picked out; we can tweak the list to fit budget and compatablity.

Note that the P5B does not support SLI. If you want a SLI rig, the only game in town right now is the 680i chipset and it has some issues.
