Optical drives are the CDROM/DVDRW drives. You can get away with just one (a DVD Burner), so you don't need a secondary.

Floppies aren't really needed these days.

On a side note, we no longer allow images in signatures: http://forum.pcmech.com/rules.php . Please remove yours. Thanks.

For the motherboard, the first thing to decide is if you want to go with Intel or AMD. Right now Intel Core 2 Duo chips are the best performers on the market, so I would suggest going that way. We recommend Asus, they are top quality.

For video cards, it depends on your budget and uses. If you're gaming, spend more. If not, spend less.

For sound cards, we recommend using the onboard sound on the motherboard at first. It is pretty good. If you think it is lacking, you can get a soundcard later on.

Right, we recommend getting one DVD Burner because they read/write to both CDs and DVDs.

As for your earlier question, you just need one hard drive.

Most of us will suggest Core 2 Duo for anything except a low end budget computer.

I have edited your signature.

Case: They are just different sizes... a Mid-Tower ATX case is usually what most users need.

Power Supply: That totally depends on the components you select and if you plan on upgrading.

Can you start by giving us a budget so we can help you in configuring a system?

ATX cases are the standard. 99% of cases you see for sale will be ATX. Get any case you like, I prefer Antecs. But whats important is the quality of the power supply. The wattage is basically determined by the video card. Powerful cards need more juice.

Here is our lists brands to buy/avoid: http://forum.pcmech.com/showthread.php?t=131195
