Everything in the main list looks compatible to me. If you decide to go with that Intel C2D processor though that you have listed under "other options", you'll have to get a different motherboard because it's a different socket than the AMD 939 is.

Only things I see that are "iffy" or that I might change would be 1)the RAM. If you're not going to do any overclocking or gaming, you don't really need high performance memory. You could save about $20 by getting just regular DDR400 by someone like Kingston or maybe G.Skill. The CAS latency is going to be probably 2.5 or maybe 3 instead of the 2 that the Mushkin has, but like I said, if not overclocking, you likely won't notice the difference.

and 2)I'm not familiar with that brand of power supply that's in your case. After further research, I found it's made by a company called ToPower, but that's all I know about it. I don't have a clue how good of quality they really are. Maybe someone else will know about that. Anyone?

Otherwise, yeah, it looks compatible.

Athena power supplies are okay. Topower is reputable.

You are overkilling on the motherboard, ram, and video card for that proposed use.

I'd get an Asus P5B-VM board and a Core 2 Duo E6300 processor - and Corsair Value Select DDR2-667 ram, dual channel kit - 2 gigs if you can afford it. The onboard video is plenty good for your use. Get a 7200.10 SATA, the ES is a server drive. You also want a retail DVD burner, not OEM, the OEM does not come with any software.

Would LightScribe's free software downloads be as good as retail DVD?
Is 2 gigs rather 1 going to improve it that much for it's uses? Les

Lightscribe is for burning labels on the CD/DVD. You still need burning software to put the actual data on the optical disk.

For most XP apps, 1gig of ram is enough, it's when you get into hi-end games and video editing type work that 2 gigs help.

Should be ok. She is online right now. Is there an error message? Try closing the browser, opening it back up and logging in again.

Good, but a couple of things:

- I wouldn't worry about an Intake fan, I think it would just create more noise.
- You'll want a retail DVD burner so you get some software for burning.
- If you can get the all-in-one floppy drive from a brand called Mitsumi, that would be great.
- Don't forget a copy of Windows XP.

Everything else looks good. Good luck, and if you need anymore help you know where to ask.

Probably just a forum snafu from high traffic. Happens occasionally. Just refresh the page and try again if it happens later on.

Thanks for the suggestions Newbuilder14. I save money by purchasing the Mitsumi floppy you told me about. What is your opinion on the HP LightScribe Burner? Walmart $79.00. I appreciate your input.

Grossly overpriced. You can get a retail Lite-On Lightscribe burner for $37.99 plus shipping. HP does not make their own burners, they are rebadged, Philips if I'm not mistaken. No better than a Lite-On.

Thumbs up Decision made....

Just wanted to say thanks to everyone involved in my computer journey. You will be glad to know all the compatible parts have been ordered! I went $160 over my budget but my brother assured me quality parts are worth it. I've enjoyed the learning experience so far. Couldn't have made this decision without the help & expertise of glc, newbuilder14, law99, juppy and Alaron. Thanks for your time.

Dual Boot?

Crazy Cora & I will be working together on her new build. She replaced her Gateway motherboard years ago & I built my PC with no problems. So I hope this goes well.
If we need help do we start a new thread or add to this one? She wants to install her old ME HD first, then the drivers for the new parts. If all is working, then install the new HD & insert XP CD to install. Is that correct & all there is to the Dual Boot setup? Les
All parts have arrived today

I would use the new hard drive and install XP/drivers and then put in the hard drive with Windows ME. I don't think it'll be easy to use your ME hard drive. You can try it and then revert back to the new hard drive if that doesn't work.

For a dual boot with Windows OS's, I believe you need to start with the older OS first. Not sure how well ME will behave in a PC swap.

Don't even try to use ME with those components - half are not supported. Just install XP on the new drive, then slave the old drive in to get your data off.

What if I put my ME HD in an external case? Would that work through XP to transfer my pictures and any other data?

Thanks! So far all has gone well! We have power.

Her Hanns.G wide screen needs 1440x900 resolution but XP's display adjustment does not offer that setting. Is there a easy solution or I will search Hanns.G for help. Les

Looks like a limitation with the GPU not being able to display at 1440x900, not windows xp. Its possible there might be a driver update which could solve the problem.

I left & she intalled XP, but MB CD (onboard video) was too confusing. Is that the answer? I will try to get it installed. Les

Install the video driver, then the monitor should plug and play and offer the correct resolutions.

Asus motherboard CDs are usually very straight forward from my previous experience. It will open up a dialog and you will then see tabs of drivers, utilities, etc. to install.

All your recommendations made my 1st build a smooth success. It's been educational & fun!

Questions: Asus MB Make Disk for DOS....What do I type at the prompt for Boot Disk DOS?

Created 3 partitions....F: photos, do I want my photo editing program in the same one?

C: XP, Avast Antivirus, Spybot, Firefox etc....

E: Business

1440 x 900 resolution fixed instantly by glc's suggestion. Thanks it's coming together nice!

You dont need to use the makedisk. That's only to install a RAID driver for initial setup.

I'd install all software on C if it's big enough and use the other partitions for data.

Thank you for the suggestions for the best parts for her use, the build went very smooth.
Her case has 120 exhaust fan (LMH), a 80 side fan (input), and places for 2 92 front intake fans. Is it best to install them all? Core 2 Duo, no gaming or overclocking. What is the best highest temp to allow for this CPU? Les
