Unhappy First build, No power, no fans, have mobo stand by light

This is my first attempt at building a pc and I think I've mucked it up. Got the case and 550W PCU from Ultra. Mobo is Intel DG965WHMKR. CPU is Intel Pentium D 940. When I turn on the PSU the standby power indicator LED lights up and stays on. When I press the power switch I get nothing. No fans, no beeps, no noises, no nothing. I unpluged everything except power to the board and cpu. I removed both memory sticks. I removed the board from the case tray and set it on wood. I then shorted out the on/off contacts on the mobo.
Still nothing. I then removed my new PSU and put it into my current pc to test the PSU. The PSU seems to be working fine. I believe that leaves me with a bad mobo, cpu or both.
My questions are; Have I missed anything? Should I take the mobo/cpu to my local computer shop for testing? If I mucked up putting the processor into the socket, should I replace both the motherboard and the CPU? Is my wife going to divorce me over this?
Sorry for being so long winded. Any help would be appreciated.

I'd suspect the Ultra power supply before I suspected the Intel motherboard as being the problem here. Try another power supply with the new set up and make sure all the power connections are hooked up.

Read through the Intel motherboard manual again (the .pdf version on the motherboard CD, not the paper one) and make sure you have everything hooked up and set up properly.

Thank you Cricket. The power supply tests good in my old machine. Yesterday, I took out the mobo again, removed and re-installed the processor. When I shorted out the pwr contacts, everything started up. The bad news is, I get nothing on the monitor. No beeps either. So I will take your advice and read through the pdf manual to see if I have missed anything. Thank you again for your reply.

Try removing the ram and see if you get some error beeps. Also check the 2 x 4 12volt connector is plugged in. Without that it will not boot.

I will remove the ram and check for beeps. I am not sure what we are talking about on the 2 x 4 12 volt connectro. I have the main power connecter which is 2 x 12 (24pin) and the processor core power connecter which is 2 x 2 (4 pin) plugged in. Am I missing something else?

Tempus, I removed the ram and powered up. No beeps other than my DVD powering up.

Sorry a mistype on my part about the connector.. In the troubleshooting guide on the Intel website they mention a 2 x 4 connector for some boards. Yours has a 2 x 2 connector. One issue may be the processor. If you refer to page 60 of the mobo manual is makes mention of the jumper position. You may want to read that page in detail. Check that the cpu and the microcode of the bios match. The power supply seems fine as you said it was tried in another system. What about the monitor? Is it working. Can you possibly try another known good power supply just to be sure? And you can check out the Intel website for their troubleshooting guide they have there.

That was an ititial concern. I went back to Intel twice before I bought and the assured me the board and cpu would match. I just swithched the BIOS into the configure mode and started it up. I get nothing on the monitor at all. When I first plug the monitor in it does a self check and say its working OK. This is normal. It's always done that. I can't put my old psu in the new machine because it's only 20 pins and the board requires 24. But, I ran the new psu a couple of hours in the old machine and it ran and worked perfectly fine. I will probably take the computer to the local computer shop today. Maybe he can test out the board and cpu. I would like to thank you and everyone else for all the help. I have learned a few things. This is a great forum!

I understand how one could easily damage a mobo socket. But how about the cpu chip? Can that be cleaned off with some alcohol and be reused?

The CPU can be removed from the socket, cleaned and reused. Always take care not to damage the pins or impart static electricity to the part. In fact when handling any component always exercise static precautions.

That's not really a good way to test a ATX 2.0 power supply...you really should connect it to a ATX 2.0 motherboard to see if everything is okay or not. Right now all you know is that it'll run a ATX 1.0 motherboard.
