New General Utility Build

Hello Guru's,

Looking to build (1st time) a strong general utility machine for Audio, DVD Authoring (from old home movies), some gaming, mostly of the CIV / Myst genre, distributed computing. No intention for LAN gaming or SLI, and probably no OC'ing. Budget $1500, current list below.

- I've heard that the on-board audio for the P5B mobo's may have some problems. Any truth to this? Should I get a sound card?

- Since I'm looking for a wireless mouse/keyboard, will this work during the first power-up or do I need a stock wired mouse/keyboard initially until the OS is loaded?

- Will probably upgrade in a year or so to a new DX10 card, will a 500 W PSU be sufficient?

System
Case: NZXT Apollo http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811146026

That all looks good.

The wireless should work on initial if you go through the connect sequence.

I'd get a Corsair 520HX PSU if you want to be ready for a DX10 card.

I agree, that power supply is high quality, but I would prepare for DX10 at this point. If you did not want to prepare for DX10, you can even drop down to this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817104954

OK, thanks for your feedback. I do want to have the ability to upgrade to a DX10 card so will go with the 520W PSU.

Thanks

Thumbs up Thanks

Just wanted to say THANKS to PC Mech - the build was completed without incident and the first power up was a full success! My only change was to go with a SATA HD rather than the IDE that I mistakingly had on the inventory. My only complaint was the case documentation (though the case itself is nice).

BTW, had to borrow a wired keyboard until the OS was installed, then the wireless mouse/keyboard software could be loaded. Wouldn't work until then.

Congratulations on successfully completing your first build.

Some cases don't come with documentation, it can alternatively be found on the manufacturer's website.

That's been one NZXTs few problems from the beginning. They design pretty nice cases, but they are fellow geeks and gamers, and not business people. You can get great support if you go to their forums, but official stuff is hard to come by.
