same computer different problems

Hello everyone,

First of all let me say thanks to all who have helped me in the past, and that I will once again need your help. I have encountered two problems with my computer. The first has to do with the audio. For some reason their is absolutely no sound on my computer. It makes the two beeps when it turns on, but other than that there is nothing. I installed all of the drives and I know that all of the wires are connected the right way, and that my motherboard has an onboard surround sound. But for some reason there isn't any sound. I have a Asus psb-5 motherboard. The second problem I am having has to do with the rear chassis fan. It won't work. I know it isn't the fan because I have connected several fans and they all do not work. I am pretty sure that I connected the fan to the motherboard properly. The led on the fan works it just doesn't turn. Thanks for any help.

Try connecting the fan to a spare PSU plug.
Is your motherboard the P5B?
Have you opened up the sound controller to make sure output isn't muted and check in hardware devices for problems with the on-board sound.

Yes I have the p5b motherboard and I am sure that the onboard sound isn't muted. I'll recheck all of my connections and the report back.

You should only get one beep when you first turn on your PC if all is well, at least on most motherboards that is the standard. Those beeps are coming from the PC speaker inside aren't they?? What is device manager reporting as far as sound devices??

Try this: CONTROL PANEL>SOUNDS SPEECH & AUDIO DEVICES>SOUNDS & AUDIO DEVICE PROPERTIES>SOUND SCHEME - enable WINDOWS DEFAULT.

lol I think I found out what the problem was. I didn't lug in the speakers. Let me plug them in and see if it works. So the only problem I still have has to do with the rear chassis fan. Does anyone have an idea as to why it doesn't work. Everything is plug in right, I know the fan works.

It may be thermostatically controlled in the bios.

Well it did turn out to be the fact that the speakers were pluged in. GLC what do you mean by thermostatically controlled and how do I change this setting to make the fan work? Thanks for the help!

Look in the BIOS for chassis fan control. There may be some fan speed settings that are determined by a cetain temp level.

some fans get their power from the Mobo, others will have a didicated supply directly from your power supply unit. Check the connection to the mother board. Is it one wire or 3? 1 wire means the mother board only controls the speed and records the RPM. You will then need to get power directly from the PSU.

I have the fan plugged into both the mobo and the psu and still nothing. I will try and look in the bios for anything and report back later.
