New build in front of me. Help needed
Okay, it's been years since I have built (semi-built, I've never tackled the BIOS stuff before) a computer and I hope you guys can help get this up and running soon. I received the parts for my new build Thursday, put everything together, and now I don't know what to do.
Here's the build: Case: ENERMAX ECA3052BL Blue/ Black SECC ATX Mid Tower Computer Case - Retail http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811124115 Motherboard: ASUS P5B LGA 775 Intel P965 Express ATX Intel Motherboard - Retail http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131030 Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 Conroe 2.4GHz 4M shared L2 Cache LGA 775 Processor - Retail http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819115003 Video Card: eVGA 256-P2-N554-AX Geforce 7600GT 256MB 128-bit GDDR3 PCI Express x16 Video Card - Retail http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814130017 PSU: Antec SmartPower 2.0 SP-500 ATX12V 500W Power Supply 115/230 V TUV, UL, CUL, CE, CB, FCC - Retail http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817103937 RAM: Patriot Signature Series 512MB 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 667 (PC2 5300) System Memory Model PSD251266781H - Retail http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820220069 I'm using my old hard drive for this build, here it is: http://www.samsung.com/Products/Hard...es_SP0802N.htm That HDD is compatible with everything, right? Well, anyways, when I turn the comp on I get that screen that says Start in Safe Mode, Safe Mode with Networking, Start Normally, etc. Then it has a timer going. When I started it normally it just restarted and ended back at that screen. I'm guessing I have to set up the BIOS. But how? What do I do when I'm at the BIOS screen? The motherboard came with a CD, how do I use it? Is there a way to check if it sees the hard drive and dvd drive, if it doesn't I may have them hooked up wrong. I dunno if this'll help but here's some pics I took, see any problems? http://img255.imageshack.us/my.php?i...0920001yp3.jpg http://img255.imageshack.us/my.php?i...0930001fg2.jpg |

The issue here is that the Windows installation on your old hard drive is looking for your old hardware, but it has been replaced. You'll need to do a Repair Installation of Windows. Dig out your Windows CD and follow the guide: http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm

I just got back from trying that Repair Install.
Everything was going smoothly until I got this error message: "unregmp2.exe - Entry Point Not Found The procedure entry point GetIUMS could not be located in the dynamic link library MSDART.DLL." Man, I thought my data and everything was safely within my grasp. What do I do now? |

Update: I restarted and I didn't get that message the second time around. After Windows was installed the computer restarted and now I get this message (a pic this time): http://img151.imageshack.us/my.php?image=0000095cr2.jpg
Man, now I'm really scared and stumped. |

You shouldn't be using an IDE drive on a P965 board. In order to get it working, you may have to do another repair install, this time pressing F6 and loading up the JMicron driver from a floppy.
Your data is still there, don't worry. The *RIGHT* way to do this is buy a SATA hard drive, reinstall Windows from scratch, install the JMicron driver, then put the IDE drive in and get your data. An observation - you used some nice high end parts in there, but you are absolutely choking it to death with only 512mb of budget ram. |

The JMicron driver from jmicron.com? I'm going to go ahead and do it the *RIGHT* way and get a SATA hard drive, etc. I hope that works.
About your observation - should I send it back and get something else? What would you recommend? Also, which hard drive would be a good choice? I thought this one looked good: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822148140 Thanks much to everyone who replied, btw. Last edited by y3k_nick; 01-29-2007 at 07:38 PM. |

Excellent hard drive choice.
The JMicron driver should be on the Asus CD. I would put a *minimum* of 1gb of ram in there - preferably 2gb. I prefer Corsair - either the DDR2-667 Value Select, or if you plan on overclocking, the XMS2 DDR2-800. Get a dual channel kit, not a single module. |

If you don't mind me asking my stupid question for the day GLC, what's the problem with using the IDE drive with the 965 chipset? Does it just not have good support for IDE or did you mean that one IDE channel needed to be left open for the opticals?

So you're sure I'll be able to get my data by doing this?
And, when I get a new SATA hard drive and install Windows on it, then what? I just pop in the CD to install that driver? Do I hook up the old drive the same way I am now? How would I get the computer to boot it up and get the data from it? |

You put the Asus CD in and install all the necessary drivers - JMicron, sound, Ethernet, etc. Then you hook up the old drive to the IDE and fire it up, set the bios to boot to the SATA drive, and get your data. The JMicron willl have to be set in the bios to be a standalone IDE and not part of the RAID system.
Juppy, it's just a lousy controller. Optical booting is a crapshoot, it won't always go into DMA mode, stuff like that. |

UPDATE: I have gotten the SATA hard drive now and am on my new build. BUT why o why does it say the total size is 127GB? It's a 320GB HDD.
Also, I was thinking about getting an external enclosure for my old hard drive. I've never used one before, though. Will I be able to repair install Windows onto the hard drive and get my data while it's in that? |

When you upgrade the Windows installation to SP2, the rest of the drive should be recognized.

You won't have to reinstall anything on the old drive to get the data off - just hook it up.
You SHOULD have used a XP CD with SP1 or SP2 already incorporated to install with. |
