New Build overheating

Fellas,

I have a P4 3.4 GHz LGA775 processor
Asus P5WD2-E Motherboard
Antec P160W case

This is my first build.

All connections have been double-checked.

When I powered on for the first time, I was able to get into the set-up and started by setting the clock. Shortly after that, as I reviewd the hardware list and boot-sequence, the machine cut power.

I rebooted and paid close attention to the display. The machine cut power again after only a few seconds, however, I was able to see the words "processer overheat error" or something to that affect just before the power stopped.

I did not retsrat it for fear of damaging a componenet. The processor fan was running, the case has a front and rear fan and both were running. There were no beeps from the machine when I first booted up.

I'll be re-reading the processor and MB manuals tonight, but if any of you have thoughts on this, I would truly appreciated it.

This may be frustrating, but I'm still having a good time!

Check the CPU heatsink. It probably isn't mounted correctly or fully latched down which can cause the CPU to heat up fast and cause a shutdown.

Thanks fellas. That did the trick.

My current problem: everything was going along smoothly until i went to install windows. The setup did not recognize my F8 key, so I couldn't accept the MS agreement. I could page up and down, and I could chose to "Not Accept." So I chose to not accept, and figured I would try a different keyboard.

But now all I get is the balck screen and a blinking cursor. I boot the system. All lights and sounds seem normal, temperature is good. I can go into the BIOS or chose to boot from CD. I went into the BIOS and restored the defaukt settings. Still, when I try to move forward, I get stuck in the black screen.

At least the blue screen of death gives you information - useless as it may be to someone of my level, but still, you feel like you have something to work with. This black screen is really just saying: go back to bed, rookie.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Check your keyboard for a "F Lock" button. It may be in a locked selection.
