Its been a while and things have obviously changed alot. I am going to build a new economy system for our retail store to run Quickbooks Point of Sale on and perhaps on a second 32" HDTV some videos and photos of our work. Thats really all this system is for. Does everything look OK? Are all the components compatible? I will install XP Pro. I am trying to build a decent system for under $650.00. This came out to 629.00

Here are my suggestions:

Motherboard: Switch that to an Asus P5B. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131030

Processor: Skip the 8xx series Pentium D processors, they are old technology, and better yet, beat all the Pentium Ds by going for a Core 2 Duo E6300. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819116253 or http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819115005

Memory: Go for some Corsair ValueSelect DDR2-667, it is great if you aren't overclocking. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820145568 (unbelievable price by the way)

Hard Drive: The future and today is SATA, so switch it out to a 7200.10 SATA hard drive from Seagate. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822148144

DVD Burner: Looks fine, but then again, if you can get the SATA one, go for it. Retail is the best option so you get software.

Thank you, I thought I had selected the SATA HDD. A question I have is why the PC5300 ram instead of the PC6400? I changed it to the Asus board and Pentium D915. Is a SATA DVD RW that much better? I didnt know they made those in SATA...

PC5300 memory works very well if you are not overclocking, I'm just trying to save you a few bucks.

On the P965 chipset, there is no native IDE support, and that is on all boards. It is all third party controlled. It is really hit or miss, if you can find an SATA drive, that would be great, but if not, you will probably still be fine. I used an IDE burner on my P5B and had no problems, so I think you'll be okay.

I think I will go with the faster ram since we will have some a/v running on a second display and these files are typically large.

I have decided to go with Raid 1...does this mobo support 2 internal raid arrays? Will I need any additional cables etc...? I will just buy 2 of the Seagate HDD. Is there a better mobo for this?

The memory won't be faster, it will be automatically downclocked to PC5300 speeds or less. The only real advantage you'll gain is if you are overclocking your system.

JMicron controls the IDE channels on the P965 board, rather than the chipset itself. This hasn't been a big deal for many people, but for others they have not been able to use IDE devices. Like I said, one burner, I think you're fine.

Edit: No, this motherboard does not support internal RAID 1. You'd have to buy an external housing for a second hard drive. Are you sure you need RAID 1?

OK so since I am not OC'ing it is a waste of money...I gotcha. I guess it is a limitation of the cpu I am buying since the mobo states it supports the 800...or am I confused?
I understand about the ide controller now.
Yeah, I think raid1 is a good option since the system will basically run our cash register software in a retail store along with our accounting software.
Can you recommend another mobo for this...I would also like connections to firewire and usb on the front of the Antec case.

If you want the Firewire and RAID would need to go to the Asus P5B-E about $25 more than the P5B.

I agree, go for the P5B-E, you seem to be able to make use of the extra features.

Boards may say the standard is DDR2-800 when in reality it will never run at that speed unless you are overclocking to high speeds. You could really use DDR2-667 memory and still have a little room to overclock.

Talking about overclocking when you are building a business machine to run a cash register and accounting software should not even be in the picture. Leave that to the hobbyists and gamers.
