Need help with new build
First I want to say that this is a great site. I've been looking around for answers and didn't find to many until I found you guys.
I want to build a new computer. It will be used primarily for music, movies, tv and some work, pretty much a media center. It may be used for some gaming but I doubt it. I have been having trouble choosing a mobo and processor. I don't want to go overkill but I also don't want something that I'll regret a year from now. I don't do any overclocking. I'm not biased to Intel or AMD. Here's what I have so far: Case:PowerUp 2559 Case with 250mm Fan and 12 Drive Bays. http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...960&CatId=1842 PSU:Depends on the graphics card. Mobo:This might be overkill. Asus M2N-SLI AMD Motherboard. http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...&Sku=A455-2320 CPU:AMD Athlon 64 X2 4800+ 2.40GHz. http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...u=CP1-AM2-4800 HDD:Seagate 320GB SATA-300 Hard Drive. http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...&Sku=TSD-320AS RAM:Not sure? Suggestions Pri Optical:LITE-ON Black 16X DVD+R 8X DVD+RW 8X DVD+R DL 16X DVD-R 6X DVD-RW 12X DVD-RAM 16X DVD-ROM 48X CD-R 32X CD-RW 48X CD-ROM 2M Cache SATA DVD Burner - OEM. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16827106047 Sec Optical:Same as above. Sound Card:Not sure? Suggestions Video Card:Not sure? Suggestions Monitor:Dell UltraSharp 2407WFP Wide-Screen. http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/p...9&sku=320-4335 OS:Windows Vista. I would like a dual dvi graphics card because I will be getting another LCD in the near future. As for budget, I want quality components but I don't want to spend money on things I will never use. Any suggestions from you guys would be great because you know a lot more about these things then I do! Thanks. |

Welcome to the forums!
Gonna have to steer you towards an Intel build here. From a purely practical point of view - Intel's core2duo chips outperform AMD's offerings like-for-like at the minute. My second suggestion is not to shop at Tiger Direct. My US-based colleagues here inform me that their customer service is shoddy. Newegg is a MUCH better bet for all your parts, and buying everything from one place saves you from paying multiple shippings. You haven't given us a budget to work with, but here's what I would build for your requirements. Intel Core2Duo E6300 Retail boxed ASUS P5B Motherboard Antec Sonata II case & quality 450w PSU Corsair Value Select DDR2-667 Memory (1GB minimum, 2GB preferred) MSI Geforce 7600GS video card (cheapest with dual DVI-out) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814127211 Seagate 7200.10 SATA Hard drive Lite-on SATA optical (the one you picked out is the best in stock at Newegg at the moment, though as an OEM, it doesn't come with software) I'd stick with on-board sound No arguments with the screen you picked ![]() FK

i would second opinion about Tigerdirect, it's days are long gone. Newegg right now is by far the best place to shop for pretty much all PC hardware.

I will look up those parts on Newegg and let you know what I find. My budget, not including the monitor, is about $1000.

Here are the parts:
Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo E6300 $187.00 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819115005 Mobo: ASUS P5B $125.00 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131030 Case: Antec LifeStyle SONATA II $100.00 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811129155 RAM: CORSAIR ValueSelect 2GB $184.00 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820145098 Video Card: MSI NX7600GS-T2D256E GeForce 7600GS 256MB $115.00 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814127210 HDD: Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 SATA $95.00 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822148140 Optical 1 & 2: LITE-ON SATA DVD Burner - OEM $31.00 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16827106047 I'll try out the on-board sound. If there's anything else or anything that can be upgraded let me know because I am under my budget. I might try to find the retail hdd and burners instead of OEM but I will stick with Seagate and lite-on. Are there any other sites besides Tigerdirect that you would suggest? |

Yeah, you might want to look elsewhere for a Retail boxed SATA DVD burner to get software. That OEM version you picked just went out-of-stock. Check out www.zipzoomfly.com
No need for a retail boxed hard drive - the motherboard will come with SATA cables, and obviously there's no software required. FK |

Right now, the CAS 5 DDR2-800 XMS2 is cheaper than the DDR2-667 Value Select - after rebate. Something to think about.

The cheaper DVD drives at zipzoomfly are out of stock so I'll just go with these:
Liteon SH-16A7S SATA $45.00 http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/Produc...uctCode=175510 Liteon SHD-16S1S $28.00 http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/Produc...uctCode=175502 I don't need 2 burners. I'll look into the memory. |

That new list looks very good. Good luck with building it.

I got all my parts in and built my computer. Everything booted, BIOS recognized all my drives. I tried to install Vista Ultimate upgrade the way it was discussed in this thread, http://forum.pcmech.com/showthread.php?t=175083, and when I have to choose the drive to put Vista on it says "Windows is unable to find a system volume that meets its criteria for installation". I have no idea what to do. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Do you have a Win2K or WinXP CD? If so, try installing it, but after formatting the drive NTFS, quit the install.

Everything worked. I really haven't run any programs on Vista yet but after messing around with it for awhile in my opinion it's a very nice OS. As long as you have the right hardware you shouldn't have any problems. It found all my new hardware and I haven't had to mess around with anything.
Thanks for everything. I'm sure you guys will be hearing from me in the future when I have a problem I can't figure out. |
