New Build Restarts about 15 seconds
Hey all. I am completely new to building computers and this is my first one, however I do consider myself someone knowledgable with computers so I am not completely confused.
Here are my system specs:
I tried to install everything and followed the directions very carefully. I even did the trial problems sticky thread that says to do barebones and then start it up. Anyways, when I turn it on it loads and I can even get to bios or past that, but then it restarts randomly after like 10-20 seconds. Any thoughts? My only thought is that the little metal pieces on the back of the motherboard face plate are still on there and they might be touched the inputs which could ground it. Does that make sense? |

Double check that the CPU heatsink is fully latched down in all 4 corners.
Another possible problem could be the PSU. Ultra's can be spotty for quailty.

Not so new

The Pentium D 830 runs hot... I would really be sure you had it on tight.

Thanks for the posts so far.
The heatsink fan that I have is attached by screws (instead of clips) and it is screwed into another piece on the back of the board. I didn't screw it too tight cause I didn't want to hurt anything, but you guys think I should tighten as much as I can? Also, why would the ultra ps even start and then go out? Is there anything I can do to check that without replacing the power supply? I don't have another one laying around. |

If that is an aftermarket CPU heatsink, did you apply a thin layer of thermal compound?
As for the screws, tighten them to where the heatsink doesn't move with lite force. PSUs may be good enough to power on but as soon as some load is applied they can crap out. Noticed you listed 2 different brands of ram. would try with only the Kingston. Ultra products are a crap shoot if they work including PSUs. |

I came home today from work and got into the BIOS before it shut down.
It says my CPU temp is 92 degrees Celsius when i start it up and it climbs to about 120 degrees celsuis before it shuts down automatically. I think this is my problem. I have tightened the heatsink fan down and also I did apply the compound that came with the heatsink fan and I did it in a very thin later as stated. Any one know what I should do? |

Fire it back up and check the temps. If they are in the 40s to low 50s steady, then your ready to move forward.

The heatsink is not making proper contact with the CPU if they are running that hot. Typical Tiger Direct and their crappy aftermarket heatsinks.

Reviews aren't that great. I *always* buy retail boxed processors and use the Intel heatsink they come with.

Guys,
At this point I got it up and running. I had the heatsink fan seated incorrectly. It just needed to be turned and then it made the seal so I think all is going to work. I am installing OS now so hopefully it does. Thanks for everyone's help and I look forward to working with each of you in the future. Thanks!!! |
