P5B-E LED light on but no fans or post

This is a first time build
Case: Antec Sonata II 450W Mid Tower
PS: Antec SP-450
Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo E6400 2.13GHz
CPU Fan: ZALMAN CNPS9500 AT 2 Ball CPU Cooling Fan
MB: ASUS P5B-E
Memory: CORSAIR XMS2 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400)
Hard Drive: Western Digital Caviar SE16 WD3200KS 320GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s
Video Card: XFX 7600GS 256 Meg 2 DVI PCIE Fanless Video Card

When I try to power up the LED on the board lights but nothing happens when the power switch is pushed. No fans no nothing.

I have tried removing all PCI cards, disconnected power from everything, removed 1394 and usb connections checked memory seating. I tried shorting the power switch pins with a screw driver. All with the same result. Any suggestion would be greatly appreciated.

Since reading this forum I have also tried taking the MB out of the case as suggested and have the same result. Help!

Thanks,
Steve

Do you have another PSU you can try? It doesn't need much power, if you're doing a bare minimum out of case test. Because it sounds like either a PSU problem or a motherboard problem, and you need to eliminate one of those as the culprit. Just because that light is on on the motherboard does not mean that the whole PSU is functioning properly.

I don't have another PS with a 24 pin connector. I will get one this week to try and eliminate this as the source.

Are you sure you've identified the right pins for the power button?

Yes. They are clearly marked on the MB and in the manual.

Is the 4 pin aux connector hooked up? You need that too, in addition to the 24 pin main.

Yes. I did miss the 4 pin connector in the first go round and thought it was going to solve the problem when I found it, but nothing changed.

And the motherboard was out of the case when you gave it a second go around? Might very well be a dead power supply, thought Antecs are high quality.

Yes it was. I'm trying to get a power supply tester tonight to check if it's dead or not.

There has been a high failure rate for the PSUs that came with the Antec SonataII cases. Check out the reviews on newegg.com to read some of the horror stories. Of course people who've had bad experiences may be more likely to write reviews than those with good, but there are so many relative to the other PSU reviews that I think they had a bad batch. I didn't even try the PSU that came with mine. The cabling on my Fortron is a little short for the case but everything I need reaches (barely).
