Core2 Duo in P2 server case

Hi Guys,

I need some advice here, I'm building my first system in about 10 years! :P I got a great deal on an ASUS P5LD2, see HERE.

I figure I'll go with a E6400 or E6600, my local place has OK pricing.

So I'm getting ready to buy a case, and I see this... For sale in my local classifieds. Picked one up just for the hell... BRAND NEW server case, dual P2 board (anyone need it?) SCSI controller, 5-drivehot-swap bay, 40xCD and floppy. It's HUGE and heavy, locked front door, etc... I really don't like the pimped out new boxes tho.

So am I crazy to think about pulling the dual P2 board, and stick the P5LD2 in there? Put five SCSI drives in the front slots? I have a new (old) AHA-2940 UW controller, which I assume I could use to control them... right? And five 18-20 gig SCSI drives would be faster & more reliable than one IDE?

...or is this dumb? Dump the server, get a regular crate and save myself the hassle?

TIA,
Duncan

Please don't post inline images. We try to keep the board dial-up friendly. Thanks

As for your question, the only concern about using that case is that older cases may not be ATX (the current form factor used by that motherboard you bought). You will need to open it up and try to match up the screw holes. If it matches, you're set. If not, you'll need a new case.

As for the SCSI drives, you could play with that if you wanted, but I would rather skip the hassle of configuring the drives and using the controller card. Pick up a new Seagate 7200.10 series SATA drive, it will be plenty fast.

Make SURE that board you got is version 2.0 - the original P5LD2 is NOT C2D-compatible.

Need a picture of the back of the case to tell if it's ATX-compatible. You will probably have to replace the power supply, I doubt it has a 24 pin ATX 2.0 unit in it.
