Parts for a Mac

I don't know if this is the right place to post this question but it seemd the closest match. I would like to get an old Mac to mess with until I have the money to buy a new one. I see a lot of older models (G3, G4, G5 for instance) for sale at a reasonable price but they are usually just the towers and most don't have much memory. I am wondering if anyone could tell me how many components of a PC also standard to Mac. It would not be worth my while if I pick up a cheap Mac and then had to buy a lot of extras, but it could be if I could use some leftover parts that I have laying around from building a few PC's. I know very little about Macs.

Do they use PS/2 keyboards and mice? regular VGA pins, 40/80 cable IDE CD players, SDRAM or DDR. Any info will be helpful. I have some PC100, PC133, and PC2100 around also mice and keyboards. I also have a PC KVM switch, so if compatable, I could just set the tower next to my PC tower and switch over when I want to use it.
Thank you.

On the older MACs the peripherals were MAC specfic. Newer system can use standard monitors but the keyboards were still MACs. Ram is also needs to be MAC specfic.

I think I got my answer. I found a few sites that talk about this subject with a link to one site where someone did it as a project. The bottom line seems to be, it is very difficult to get parts. They are costly when you can get them and it would be more expensive to build in the long run over buying. The bottom-bottom line was don't do it unless you just want a hobby but not because you want a Mac.
