Are you looking for a complete system: computer/keyboard/mouse/monitor/speakers/OS?
If so, $700 will be a tight budget. But if you only need the tower, then $700 is doable.

See my personal message response for a rough parts list for an idea.

Welcome to PCMech, Local. What you may want to do, if you have not already, is browse around some other similar threads. I did a Search for budget build list HERE, and there are twenty threads within just the last month or two. Maybe looking at some of these will give you an idea for what it is you want to pursue in a new build. Once you start to develop some ideas, everyone will be glad to make sure you're headed in the right direction!

As far as life and usage goes, how long are we talking? What am I looking at in terms of cost? Does more $$ = longer life? Or is it better to buy decent and then spend on later upgrades? Did that make any sense?

Thanks everyone for your help. I'm sure I'm looking in the right direction now. Now it's time to make budget.

A well balanced rig lasts years. These suggestion your getting... are building one. Hard drives are the one component that goes and even the most quality ones have wide variables on the life they see. The motherboard is the most important piece, and determines the length of life you'll see from your system in upgrading and changing adjustments as your needs change. PSU choice is very important too. Not only to deliver the power to the different components but do it efficiently so as not to create heat which is the major reason for component failure. Always leave a little head room, with your component's requirements, so they don't operate in a stressed state.

To my eyes it seems all good, but a word of caution: I got a P5W DH Deluxe and i've sent it back to my vendor because it's most probably, if not certainly defect. Asus is generally recommended for mobos and I hope mine was just a one-off case...

You probably don't need that much of a motherboard as the P5W DH. Would look to the P5B-E or Deluxe.
The PSU you picked is good but a less expensive unit would be the XClio 450BL: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817189003

Don't forget the operating system when you're trying to price out your new computer. That'll add another $90 or so. As you already saw the parts you picked out cost a lot more than $700 so you're going to have decide if you're going to wait and save more money to build it right or try to build it now with lesser parts.

Trying to piece together a computer/entertainment center for only $700 is gonna be a challenge. When you say entertainment center, just what do you mean? Are you going to use the computer to watch movies and play music through instead of using typical entertainment center components (TV, stereo, surround sound equipment, etc...)?

Whoa - that's a professional workstation board, not a standard desktop board. It has PCI-X slots for things like SCSI controllers. You do not need that, just get a standard P5B.
